This is a beautifully filmed movie made from a classic novel. Adults only please.It tells the story of a very young French girl who awakens her sexuality with a handsome young Chinese man in French Vietnam in the early 1900s and unfortunate bitter sweet ending.

I started to watch this movie on TV and wanted to see the whole story. I must have gotten the uncut version for it is way to sexy for regular TV. Deffinantely not one to watch with children around or anyone else you feel uncomfortable with watching sex sences!!! I did like the story. I got very emotionaly involved in the story ( crying.... you know girl stuff). It was very different from my own world. I culturally learned things from the movie and the time period. I would watch it again. (My "good" rating comes from the fact it has so much sex in it. Otherwise, it would have been an excellent. NOT A FAMILY ORINATED MOVIE.)
FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS MOVIE . . . A touch of sadness and longing for the forbidden underscores this love story, and yes, this is a love story; a story of unspoken emotional need and steamy lusting between two individuals who originate from two totally different cultures ~ cultures where hardship, indifference and intolerances are predominant. Beautifully scripted sex scenes place this movie into the higher "R" category, but this is not to be confused with cheap pornography ~ the scenes are energized, lusty and compassionate. This movie IS a classic for me, alongside "Wuthering Heights" & "Lady Chatterley's Lover" ~ a "must have" for your Romance/Drama collection!
