DVD Secrets of The Civil War (DVD, 2008, 4 disc set)
I'm not sure the word "secrets" best describes the content -- this work rather represents some on-the-spot detective work which gets beyond the Victorian historian spin (remember, the victors always write the history books) and examines what the evidence on the battlefields has to say about events. The conduct of battlefield events was, in a number of instances, managed (mismanaged?)by ambitious men who's primary objective was to write a heroic resume which might be translated into a political future. Hard to get to the truth of what really happened under those circumstances; but now, battlefield investigations with modern, high tech equipment identifies new event parameters that probably even the participants, in the awful chaos of combat, didn't understand. The forensic investigations ... SECRETS OF THE CIVIL WAR History Channel DVD
I found this DVD set to be informative and entertaining. I am a long time Civil War buff and this set of DVDs was something I wish I had found years ago. There are some re-enactments in the programs, that I didn't really care for. Personally, I would have preferred a treatment more in the style of Ken Burns' Documentary. But this is a personal preferance. I got a lot of good information from this set and there are some 'real life' tests done with Civil War type firearms, on ballistic gelatin. All in all, several hours of good programming. I would unhesitatingly buy it again, knowing what I know now.I found this DVD set to be informative and entertaining.
