This DVR works well, I use it every day. You realize how much time you waste watching all of the commercials that come with the programming.
I don't have any experience with another brand to compare the performance of this unit, but it seems to work well. I bought the unit to replace a dvd recorder so I'm saving money because I don't have to buy blank DVD's.

Feature rich recorder with built-in tuner.
I purchased this unit to replace a previous Panasonic recorder I used for years. Since that unit is no longer manufactured, I chose to give the Magnavox a try. The unit worked well with minimal setup right out of the box. However, in order to take advantage of all the features you must read the manual. Reading the manual is like "getting in" on all the secretes and hidden features. I found this to be a very reliable recorder and does exactly what it is advertised to do. Unfortunately, my cable TV service only allows me to use one channel of the built-in tuner because I have to go through their equipment to decode their scrambled channels. Great piece of equipment has plenty of recording space on harddrive. You can record to the harddrive and then to DVD or from DVD to the harddrive. Easy to use. Acts just like a DVR and automatically once tuned on starts to record live programming that you are watching. You can do so much with this, edit recorded movies that are saved on the harddrive, edit the title, edit the chapters, then use high speed dubbing to transfer to DVD or you can watch while you record to DVD.
