A small quarto in later calf with gilt ruling/dentils, with acanthus at the corners, spine has 6 raised bands with, decorative gilt in the compartments. Headers in fraktur, text, in roman type, woodcut historiated initials. Leather is scuffed, and crackled, joints starting, still handsome, spine label, missing. Marbled endpapers with bookplate, some owner names in, blanks, title page has a small ink smear, one blank has an old, repair or finger tab, pages are generally clean with little, foxing, 3 pages have small lacks at corners, T1 has an ink spot, in the margin, otherwise clean and unmarked. "Correctorium" at, end (p. [216-217]) . OCLC 50029026. Owner name L. R. (? ), Vandevelde 1585 Louvain on one blank, a date of 1767 on, another, the book plate of Henrici Vanden Block, chaplain of, St. Michael & St. Gudula Cathedral, Brussels. Only a few copies, recorded in the USA and Europe and very few auction records,, none more recent than 1980. Cochlaeus was a German humanist,, controversialist, and opponent of the Reformation. He was, at, first, supportive of England's Henry VIII but became appalled, by Henry's "lawless passion" and then by Henry's execution of, his friends Thomas More and John Fisher. Cochlaeus compiled, this work which includes the decretals of 9th century Pope, Nicholas to the Byzantine emperor Michael as a warning and, lesson to Henry. The volume is especially interesting because, it contains an account of Thomas More's execution along with, his epitaph and several letters written by More to Erasmus. It, is also interesting as an early European defense of More and, Bishop Fisher. The printer is Melchior Lotter, the younger, (d., 1542) a member of a well-known German family of printers. His
