I never thought that Steven Spielberg could ever have topped himself after the emotional magnitude and overwhelming success of the 1993 epic film "Schindler's List". But, he did just that, when he helmed the director's chair for the 1998 World War II drama "Saving Private Ryan". Once again, his sense of vision dealing with the second world war as the main subject matter only proves that he can take any type of story-telling a make it unique. The cast is first rate, with Tom Hanks giving perhaps his best performance as Captain John H. Miller. who leads a squad of war-time soldiers into combat behind enemy lines to rescue a sole surviving recruit whose 3 brothers were all killed in action. Tom Sizemore as Sgt. Michael Horvath; Edward Burns as Richard Reiben; Vin Diesel as Adrian Caparzo; Giovanni Ribisi as Medic Irwin Wade; Adam Goldberg as Stanley Mellsih; Barry Pepper as Daniel Jackson; Jeremy Davies as Timothy E. Upham; and, of course, Matt Damon as Private James Francis Ryan round out an excellent supporting cast. Not only did this film go on to be the highest grossing movie of the year; it also went on to recieve 5 Oscars including Best Director for Spielberg. This is intense filmmaking at its very best. This film, along with "Schindler's List", tie together as the Best Motion Picture Of All Time!Read full review
This movie is cousin to "Shindler's List", and ranks high in performance quality. The inexplicable events of World War 11 are dramatized (again), as was shown in "Shindler's List". Will remain a shining example of the versatility of Spielberg. A must see, must have video for all to enjoy. Cherish each and every moment of peace.
