The HP 3400A has 10 Mhz bandwidth and True-RMS readings via a thermocoupling bridge which measure the heating component of the voltage. This makes it superior to conventional analog and digital voltmeters where regular analog meters top out at 3 or 4 Mhz and where DVM's often top out at 100Khz. The HP 3400A also offers a crest factor of 10:1 so that pulse trains in the signal will not throw off the main voltage signal that the meter is attempting to read. One caution that should be observed is that the thermocoupling circuitry can be damaged by excessive overloads more easily than conventional meters so always start the meter at a higher voltage setting and then scale down to the range to be measured. Doing that will ensure that you don't overload or damage the meter..
