There has never been a motion picture event quite like that of the 1968 movie "HEAD", the very first (and only) feature film starring the Monkees (Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, David Jones, Micky Dolenz), the pop music sensation that rocked the latter half of the 60s (and beyond). Following the cancellation of their popular NBC sitcom, they next entered the world of the cinema, with this remarkable film outing that features no coherent plot, a top-notch roster of guest stars and 6 brilliant songs. Among the many on-screen appearances: Annette Funicello, Jack Nicholson, Teri Garr, Logan Ramsey, Percy Helton, Sonny Liston, Frank Zappa, Vito Scotti and Victor Mature. The songs are: "Porpoise Song", heard at the start and the end of the film, presented in an almost psychedelic vision; "Circle Sky", showcasing the Monkees live; "Can You Dig It", featuring the guys flanked by a harem of dancing girls; "As We Go Along", a mellow ballad accompanied by lush scenery; "Daddy's Song", a Broadway-style show-tune with a solo from Davy; "Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again", a Peter Tork rocker that ranks as one of the group's best songs. The dialogue is a real hodge-podge of words and visuals that mesh together into a series of short clips with a free-form flow. This DVD version features a restored picture and remastered soundtrack, and also contains several "HEAD" trailers and commercials. This is a unique rock music film from the late 60s, that still holds up very well, even after nearly 45 years. A significant chapter in Monkees folklore.Read full review
If you like movies with a distinct, bizarre, psychadelic twist and THE MONKEES, then you'll love this movie. A far more serious venture than the tv show, Head is a true masterpiece of the psychadelic era. Co-produced and co-written by JACK NICHOLSON, this movie is definitely not for kids but maintains that slap-happy idiot romp that we all know and love from the Monkees tv show. I bought this movie because i was recently reminded of the greatness of the monkees, by a good friend of mine, and figured i better buy it before i forgot again. The only nagitive, yes i spelled it that way on purpose, is that the dvd case is cardboard with the plastic closing flap. A movie of this caliber deserves a higher quality case.
This film is a great parody of the stuggles of a rock band that is just too famous. Are they in charge, or just being manipulated by the music and film business? The four lads have the craziest adventures ever known. Suppressed by the Mormon church because of the jokes about drugs and Coca-Cola, it has finally made it out of the underground to be a music video classic. You don't have to like to the Monkees to enjoy this video. Everyone and every thing are spoofed a la Matt Groenig, from the Viet Nam war through social attitudes about rock'n'roll, the music business, cops, cross dressers and the fake world we live in. There are plenty of obvious referrences to LSD, some of the trippiest video effects in history and great music videos. There are also cameo appearances by Dean Martin, Jack Nicholson, Frank Zappa, the Italian army and the jolly green giant. Well worth the price. I saw it in the theater and am so happy to finally have a good copy. You can play it as background or a feature presentation. Very funny and still quite deep. If you were 8-12 yrs old when the Monkees came out in 1966 you were enthralled with the music, fascinated with their antics, and glad they had a Saturday morning show. This movie was their "final hurrah" to the viddys...great music, odd plot, and a cast of characters to boot. Something to enjoy as a kid...but really digging it as an Adult
