Panasonic DMR-EZ27 DVD Recorder personal review
Owning several Panny units, the EZ27 as one of three of my most recent units, I can only evaluate their performance based on my personal experience rather than by comparing them to other brands. They record without question a quality rendition of what you wish to record. I've tried all speeds, and except for the 8 hour mode, the XP, SP, and EX do what they claim to do. The 8 hour gives a VCR type of picture more or less, but suitable for old tapes or movies etc. Easy to use, and goof proof against accidental erasure. Although I have had a problem with a ES20 that failed upon first trying, and also reading about the same from several customer reviews, electronics can last almost a lifetime, or they can fail in a short time. This doesn't say anything to me about quality, but rather the ... Quality of recording and playback, as well as easy to use, and it's slim design makes the Panny line a good choice, and the EZ27 is right up there as well. They are not perfect, and I say that because when I tried to record some old B&W videos from a camera I made back in the late seventies, I had a problem whereas it would overload the contrast and brightness to a point that they were useless, and on two units, static color lines would run across the screen, but when something in color came on, they recorded perfectly. This may be a problem that "any" of the brands may experience. I've been able to correct the problem by putting together a volume control configuration between the output and input of the machines so as to reduce the signal being input to the recorder. Works like a charm, and I've had no other problems to speak of. The Panasonic line offers a pretty good bunch of electronics based on my experience with their VCRs of which I own a half dozen, as well as their DVD recorder/players. Buying online through EBay has proved to be a cost effective way of owning something that others had to pay two to three times, and even more than what it costs to buy through Ebay. I have purchased three EZ27s online for less than the cost of one unit from a electronics store. All in all, I have to say buying used or new on Ebay has proved to be an easy and fool proof method of shopping, and they are quick to help with any problems that may arise. It makes it easy to offer an opinion that compliments doing business with Ebay as it is obvious that not only the sellers, but the buyers as well strive for ratings that show they are reliable to do business with. Hats off to Ebay for making it easier to recognize top sellers and buyers.

Could have designed it better.....
I bought the Panasonic DMR-EZ27 DVD recorder as a back up machine, as I already own the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK. The features and software are similar between these machines, but the EZ27 has a few drawbacks. One is, it is very picky on which discs it will record to. I use mostly DVD+RW's, which are a few years old, but record fine on other machines. This machine rejects most of my DVD+RW's discs, many timers did not work without warning. It only started working properly with brand new +RW's, which is a drawback for me. The EZ48VK has no such problem with my older discs. The digital tuner works well, however, doing a channel scan through my digital cable line, it did not reject the "scrambled" or unusable channels, resulting in my having to manually delete hundreds of digital cable ... I bought the Panasonic DMR-EZ27 DVD recorder as a back up machine, as I already own the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK. This machine locked up a few times, which is common with Panasonics, after I loaded the software update available on the Panasonic Customer Support web page, the problems seemed to minimize. I've used several DVD-R's and DVD-RW's, they seem to record without incident. Overall it's a decent machine with a very good picture, however it's best to stick with Panasonic machines manufactured after 2008.

I have owned 16 different models of Panasonic dvd recorders for home use. The quality of the recordings and the ease of use are exceptional. However, the quality of each and every one of the machines I currently own or have owned is so very, very poor. I have never had a machine last longer than one year. Never!! I always use high-quality recording discs, so that is not an issue. The clocks on every machine run fast, so they have to be changed back to the correct time every two to three weeks, or any recordings scheduled will be off. Scheduled recordings are not guaranteed to record. Sometimes, the machine's counter stays at zero, and simply fails to record a scheduled program. My advice is to never purchase a Panasonic dvd recorder without also purchasing an extended warranty. ... I have owned 16 different models of Panasonic dvd recorders for home use. The quality of the recordings and the ease of use are exceptional. However, the quality of each and every one of the machines I currently own or have owned is so very, very poor. I am discouraged that Panasonic continues to demand such a high price for such exceptionally poor quality. When I pay hundreds of dollars for a piece of home-entertainment equipment, I feel I have a right to expect a lifespan of more than one year at best. Panasonic either needs to bump up their quality standards, or significantly reduce the price of these units accordingly. I continue to purchase the recorders because of their ease of use and the high-quality recordings. I used a Sony for a month while my Panasonic was in repair, and the Sony was exceptionally cumbersome to set up a recording, compared to the Panasonic. I remain on the lookout for a suitable replacement for the Panasonic. When and if I do find one, goodbye Panasonic.

This model no longer requires disc formating prior to recording. Disc finalization is faster than my prior Panasonic unit. Dislikes: I have experienced the occasional frozen operation that other reviewers have noted. I simply unplug the unit, re-power after a few seconds, and everything works. Start-up is a little slow, but I think that is due to extensive Built-In-Test checks, not necessarily a bad thing.Likes: Excellent recording quality and reasonable ease of operation. Compact size.
