The selections, for the most part, are great. I think Winegardner avoids the mistake of selecting stories just because they are easily 'teachable'. So many anthologies do this and you're left to wonder why the student is being asked to read the least ambitious of, say, Alice Munro's stories., The alphabetical arrangement of the course material seems democratic and not overly prescriptive, as organizing the material historically might be., The selections, for the most part, are great.
