Package arrived well packaged. Very well actually. No visiblendamage to the box. I put the item aside as several other items arrived, and I wasn't going to be using it soon. When I opened it a few weeks later and removed the item from the box it was in pieces. I contacted trainz and they told me too bad, beyond the window of help. I understand this, but either way the sent a used and smashed item they listed as good. Given the description of new I wasn't in a hurry to check it. I'll avoid them.

The 2662 Mallets are beautiful but have poor performance and pulling capability.
The basic problem is that it does not have any speed, moves very slow. It appears a grease lubricant was used on the internal gears and it has hardened and is creating significant resistance.It is also possible that the wheel electrical contacts (there are 6) are creating too much resistance. When I set upside down and establish electrical contact to only two wheels, the motors work fine and it has significant speed. Is it too heavy, are the motors worn, what is the problem? I will keep it and do what I can to resolve the problem. I have taken the gear housing cover off the bottom and am trying to remove as much grease as possible and replace with a modern non petroleum light lubricant. I am also wondering why it was necessary to have 6 electrical pickups when my contacts on only two ... The basic problem is that it does not have any speed, moves very slow. Great, high quality, unique Colorado narrow gauge loco.
superb locomotive, unique. has great pulling power and sound. Handles tightest radius with ease. The front coupler is non functional. Electrical pick up is excellent. However, because this model has no pick up shoes, it is important that track be very clean. Otherwise, dirt causes resistance and micro arcing. Micro arcing, basically tiny sparks, sometimes visible in the dark, and at higher voltage, results in pitted wheels. The wheels then pick up dirt. Clean the wheels, clean the track, clean the back of the wheels, and, check the contact plungers periodically for best performance. If one has any running issues, they may likely due to smoke fluid in the forward motor, (common with LGB mallets, and which can increase draw on power.)
