The NYC Niagara is a good prototype for a brass model. Because NYC had to pack such a huge engine into an envelope that would fit through existing stations and tunnels, the design was very smooth and most complicated piping and mechanisms were concealed. Because the williams brass engines were built to a lower price point, the Niagara works well because the engine is basically smooth on the outside and doesn't have a large amount of detail parts. The Williams Niagara drive mechanism is so-so and can be noisy, but the huge tender lends itself to adding modern sound and electronics from Lionel or MTH, and some repainting can reduce the high gloss and make the engine look more realistic. There are lots of these around and prices should be low, but if you want a heavier, harder pulling engine with modern bells and whistles, look to Niagara's from other makers-- 3rd Rail for brass, or Lionel/MTH.Read full review
