Brigandine is a world-based, turn based strategy game with multiple factions to control and a centralized timeline. You play one of the Lords of these factions and lead your nation to glory, conquest, revenge, that time you burned a village down, make a few friends, kill a few friends, that village really deserved it, go on quests, manage resources and that village was just a stepping stone to ultimate victory. Fans of the earlier Heroes of Might and Magic will immediately feel familiar with the mechanics and those who enjoy the AD&D campaign setting of Birthright will find this enjoyable in the same manner. The game is also either brutally hard or I'm really bad yet either way I'm having an absolute blast with it. 10/10 would make my bank account cry buying it again.

This was the first ps1 game I ever played; I rented it from a video game store near the time the ps1 first came out (1998 I believe). I selected it because it looked the most enticing among many other ps1 games. This is in my top 2 or 3 strategy games of all time, and in my top 5 games of all time and I have a long history playing video games. The graphics are very good, and I especially like the 1 on 1 battle sequences. Strategy-rpgs are my favorite genre; and strategy games really don't get any better than this. In video games I love being given a character selection choice that have their starting strengths and weaknesses, and it's up to you to manage customization and resources like money, a balancing of troops, defending your territory, etc... You can start this game with 1 of 5 armies (6 if you have a special cheat code!) and there is much replay value to this game. This game may not be the most popular but I'm telling you if you like strategy games this game is in a league of its own. The 1 criticism I have of this game is the difficulty may not be hard enough ( though you get to choose from easy, normal and hard modes).Read full review

Great game!! Graphics are really good for PS1. I actually had this game when it came out and loved it. I loaned it to a friend to play and he moved away without giving me the game back, which I Really regret, especially considering how much the game is now.

Quality. That is what you are getting with Brigandine. Does it have the most sparkling, wonderful, eye-poping production value? No, no it does not. However, when it comes to meat and potatoes strategy role-playing, nothing tops this - no matter the console. It's difficult enough to make you think about formations, tactics, and organization, but not so complex as to overwhelm a first-time player. Brigandine successfully straddles a line between intricacy and simplicity that few games ever achieve. There are a large number of knight classes, all of which can be leveled-up to other successive classes (mage-druid-sorcerer) which enable new spells to be unlocked, and few classes even approach the feeling of over-use. The battle sequences, as is, slow the gameplay down for one-on-one action shots that look horrid by the standards of today (blockly, ps1 polygons). They look thrown in for dazzle, and add nothing to the enjoyment of play. In contrast, the rest of the battle scenes feature sprites on pre-rendered backgrounds which look fantastic, and you have the option to turn these one-on-one scenes off (yay!). My advice is to turn these off immediately. Aside from this, the game plays amazingly, and there are 50+ hours of gameplay in having 5 different factions to beat the game with, and three difficulty settings. It's amazing that Atlus missed so many pitfalls a game like this could have. The battle system is so smooth and intuitive - concise but varied. Nothing feels over-used or wasted. There are a large number of monsters (controlled under each knight's party by you), and again, all of which can level up to higher classes (dragon-red dragon-salamander) earning them new abilities. There are quite a number of pricy ps1-era RPG's but only Brigandine (and Suikoden II) seem worth the money.Read full review
This game is a great classic. Right up there with Final Fantasy Tactics. Highly recommend it for the tactical turn based strategy game fans. The story line is also rather good though not quite up to Final Fantasy Standards. Great game to loose many hours into while relaxing.

Definitely one of those games you'll want in your collection. It's a game that combines both strategy and RPG elements. It's not your standard RPG, but you'll like the leveling and gameplay of the game, and unlike other RPG's you'll to employ some type of setup and attack in your strategy to gain an edge. The game is usually more fun, when you're on the losing end, it forces you to be much more creative. Colorful characters, interesting side stories. Though a tad repetive in the things you can do, it's rather a kin to Dragon Force. Lots of equipment to get lots to customize. Highly recommended.
This has been a favorite game of mine since I was young. I already have a working copy and purchased this to give to my friend who graduates this year. I highly suggest this game, even to the most recent of video game enthusiasts due to it's unique and quality battle system. The graphics are distinctly PS1 era, but the game play more than makes up for this. If you've never tried Brigandine, buy a copy and try it out, and if you don't like it you'll probably make your money back! Even edging at $100 a copy ten years after it's released, it's worth it.
Everything is good in the game except the teal sector which does not want to play properly. It will not go to the next frame; when you try to summon creatures it wants to go blank. Also the music skips in the teal sector when playing. Otherwise it plays fine. That is why I only gave it four stars.
