About this product

Product Information

This horror classic was produced by Universal (beginning that studio's string of brilliant horror movies) in response to the success of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Universal chose two luminaries of German Expressionism, director Paul Leni and actor Conrad Veidt, for the film and in doing so introduced a new and highly influential aesthetic to American movies. The film stars Veidt as Gwynplaine, the son of an aristocrat who is kidnapped for political reasons before being disfigured by a gypsy surgeon, who leaves the boy's face paralyzed in a contorted smile. Finding refuge in a traveling theatre troupe, Gwynplaine's lineage is eventually discovered and he soon finds himself being pulled back into the social and political world he was taken from as a boy. Featuring a masterful performance from Veidt along with beautiful and haunting photography, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is one of the silent era's great horror films.

  • Fantastic Silent Film

This movie often gets put in the silent film horror genre, but really could be called more of a romantic tragedy.Released by Universal, who back in the day where masters of these fantastic kind of movies.Directed by the German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni, the film is an adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel of the same name and stars Conrad Veidt as "Gwynplaine" and Mary Philbin as the blind "Dea", his love. The film is known for the grim Carnival freak-like grin on the character Gwynplaine's face which is why the film is often credited as a horror movie.Gwynplaine is often credited with being one of the inspirations for "The Joker"in the Batman comics. If you look at the first appearance of The Joker, you can see he looks almost exactly like Veidt's Gwynplaine in the movie.Veidt is ...

  • Almost not like a silent film at all!

Great movie about a young boy named Gwynplaine who had a grin carved into his face so he could Forever Laugh at his father, who was put in the Iron Lady. As Gwynplaine grows, it follows his life to a carnival where he is known as the Man Who Laughs, recieving acclaim from the countryside. And also the love that he finds from his travelling companion, a blind girl by the name of Dea. That is until the court of King James II finds him....... Based on the book by Victor Hugo, the 1928 classic The Man Who Laughs, starring Conrad Veidt is a fantastic film creating its own world on the silent screen. This movie was directed by Paul Leni who decided that the movie should remain silent since Veidt really couldn't speak with the apparatus the gave him that sinister grin! Veidt had to act soley with ...

  • Very Pleased With Film

I had some misgivings about purchasing this DVD. I have never paid so much for a used DVD before. I am however, extremely happy that I took a chance on this vintage film. Someone whose opinion I value, had suggested I try to get a copy of it. Anyone who places value on fine silent movies would have to rate this one at the top. Conrad Veldt is wonderful in this. For someone who mainly connected him With disagreeable nazi roles, this was an eye opener that led to some serious research into the really fine actor who died far too soon. The plot captures the viewer in the very beginning and never lets go. The film is an excellent copy, very clean and clear in my opinion, and you almost forget that it is a silent movie. The film is that good. The final thought I came away with is ...
