About this product

Product Information

Based on the 1983 novel by Ron Hansen, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD captivatingly depicts the final few months of the legendary Jesse James's life. He was 34, and his days of ruthless robbing had dwindled, yet his fearsome reputation continued to swell. With an abundance of nickel-books retelling his brutal gun-slinging adventures, James (portrayed by Brad Pitt, in one his most convincing and moving roles) had become a symbolic hero for many Americans, and a dazzling tabloid icon for the 19th-century media. A particular young man seduced by the wonderment of James, the shifty Robert Ford (a breakthrough performance by Casey Affleck), wormed his way in as a James groupie, in the hopes of snagging a coveted spot alongside his brother Charley (played by the always affable Sam Rockwell) as one of the bandit's cronies. Ford, fiercely insecure and painfully aware that he would never be taken seriously by James (who, ever-plagued by paranoia and skepticism, found Ford's earnest obsession a bit unsettling), grew increasingly angry with his idol, leading to a destructive path that ultimately ended in the anticlimactic death of Jesse James--and brought the treacherous Robert Ford the notoriety he had always wanted.Although this film takes place in the late 1800's, its eerie relevance to modern-day celebrity-obsession scandals is astounding, and adds a fresh scope to what could be viewed as just another cinematic western. Director Andrew Dominick (CHOPPER) furthers the film from its genre by banishing clichéd bullet-infested showdown scenes, instead embracing the relationships and interactions of the outlaws, and creates a mood of brooding and contemplation with exceptional camera angles and lighting. His intensely sophisticated approach to filmmaking illustrates the darkest corners of the characters, and insightfully provides a deeper, heartfelt portrayal revealing what the men might have been like behind their masks.

    A great story well told.

Pitt and Afleck deliver immersive roles. There are a few historical slips of narrative/dialogue but those don't impact the characters' credibility. There are moments of stellar photography (I've added stills of my visually favorite scene). DP Deakins shows why the Coen brothers (in my top three directors list) often go to his talents. A truly impressive film. T

"Don't Expect a Shoot 'Em Up Western" or "My Great Grandfather knew The Real One"...

What appeared to be a Very Interesting Film (when viewing the trailer), I found to be rather slow with a lot more dialogue than action. Considering this was a film by Ridley Scott about Jesse James, and based on the novel of the same name, the photography, wardrobe, and sets made up for the Overly Long Interactions between characters. With only a portion of Historical Accuracy, I found Pitt's Portrayal of James as a Loner and Sociopath more "Artistic Freedom" than what I believe to be true. One item revealed in the film that is rarely written about or known, is that Jesse James had a portion of his Middle Finger missing on his Left Hand. This was told to me by my Great Grandfather, who at Ten Years Old actually viewed James' Body in 1882 (he died at 100 Years Old in 1972). I also recall him telling me there was still Gold,Money, etc. hidden in Missouri Caves that was yet to be found. I will have to view this DVD again tonight as there are some "Pitt" Fans who had never saw it, however I'm holding out for The 1939 Film with Tyrone Power...

  • A Fairly Accurate Story

Part of the film was a little confusing, and that was in the middle when the one man was killed. Also, one of the towns mentioned never existed, so that historical aspect is wrong. It was a good film otherwise and it kept me interested.

  • what can I say. I really really liked it.

Great movie. Visually stunning with many memorable scenes. The dp & director had their A game going for setting up the scenes. All the acting was spot on with Casey & Brad doing exceptionally great jobs. Even though it was a long movie it never plodded along because of the the great writing & direction of Andrew Dominik. The music soundtrack complemented the movie. I had to buy the cd too.

  • It makes you miss Jesse.

This picture is clearly artistically interpretative, but it does its homework regarding research. The costumes, environments, and euphemisms transport one to the time period presented. It explores the post North American civil war reconstruction period without insulting history or attempting overt historical revisionist propaganda. It is an art film about mood and atmosphere in the same vein Blade Runner. One believes the characters and forgets the players. Nick Cave's music is dreamy. The narration by Hugh Ross haunting. The Andrew Dominik did an excellent adaption of the novel.

Love the Jesse James story! - the movie's a tad slow, but totally engaging - Brad Pitt as Jesse is great, as is Casey Affleck as Bob Ford - I recommend it totally!!!
