As tends to be the case when humanity's future is extrapolated, two sides are embroiled in an inter-galactic conflict and the outcome will decide the fate of mankind. In this case, it's a civil war between The Earth Empire and the League of Free Worlds. Humanity, having long since drained the planet Earth of its resources, has ventured out into the far reaches of space, colonizing planets, and destroying those who would stand in its way. Players assume the role of a rookie pilot in the employ of the League of Free Worlds, determined to aid the fight for freedom in any way possible.<br><br>An action-oriented space-simulation, Colony Wars charges players with completing 70 different missions that range in scope from patrol, scouting, and escort to all-out offensive campaigns against fleets of frigates and smaller fighters. Depending on your battle prowess (or lack thereof), you'll take on new and unique missions. Failure will see your mission tree branch off in a direction where your past failures come into play. Successfully completing a mission, however, will allow you to continue on the pre-ordained path. Your ship is equipped with primary and secondary weapons; the former run the gamut from lasers to EMP and plasma weapons, while the latter consist of missile and torpedo types.<br><br>The various weapon types differ in effect. For example, some will only destroy shields, while others will damage the enemy craft itself. The numerous ships in which players will find themselves all vary in ability and ratings. Conventional rules apply here, with faster ships that pack less firepower and slower, heavier ships that are armed to the teeth. The camera can be switched between three different views, from a cockpit view to an external and an internal view, providing players with their desired perspective on the action. FMV sequences are interspersed throughout the title and, along with narrated mission briefings, help reveal the title's story. Colony Wars is also one of the first titles to support Sony's Dual Analog controller.

Best Sci Fi Shooter Game ever for the PS1!
This is simply the best Sci Fi Shooter game, and possibly the best game ever released, on the PS1 Platform. The graphics are incredible, the gameplay is smooth, and the controls are crisp. The sound effects and story narration are excellent. The cinematic in game special effects are simply stunning. The game includes action packed deep space dogfights across 5 solar systems. To win you must strategically advance through more than 70 non-linear missions, with over 5 possible endings. You can fight with Scouts, Bombers, Interceptors, Stealth Fighters and more. You'll fight against over 50 enemy ships including every type of fighter, naval squadron, warship, and even battle stations. Basically this game has it all. When Psygnosis released this game in 1997, they set the standard for ... This is simply the best Sci Fi Shooter game, and possibly the best game ever released, on the PS1 Platform. Colony Wars is their latest release, and it has taken the Playstation by storm. Using graphics that are (pardon the pun) light years ahead of the competition, Colony Wars has the best graphics ever seen on the Playstation to date. Graphics aren't all, however, and Colony Wars is not just another pretty boy. With gameplay as fun and addictive as any other good game, Colony Wars is the brightest star in the galaxy (We at Game Revolution neither admonish or encourage excessive use of puns. Colin, however, has been beaten severely - Ed.). The graphics, as I said before, are simply amazing. Looking better than most computer games that are coming out now, Colony Wars truly brings the Playstation to a brand new level. The ships themselves are some of the smoothest polygons I have ever seen. The only time that you ever encounter a polygonal glitch is when you run into some of the big ships. Your view can cut through a polygon, allowing you to see right through it. However, not only does that not happen often (unless you suck at flying), but the beauty of the rest of the game covers over that very nicely. The light sourcing is also some of the best in the space genre. Do not look directly at the sun - it will temporarily blind you and leave you open to attack. Enemies will often fly in front of the sun to disorient you. There is also random space debris that you can destroy for fun; of course, you might have to ignore your primary mission to do so. You can choose from three different points of view. One is in the cockpit of the craft, with all your various cockpit controls. The second is the same first person view, but with minimized cockpit interference with your line of sight. The third view is a third person aspect that, while difficult to control, allows you to watch the smooth movement of the ship that you are flying. Speaking of the ships, there are six different ships that you control during the game. Depending on the missions that you follow, you fly anything from a scout to a heavy assault craft. While some ships may have heavy weapons, they are as slow as a snail riding on the back of a turtle. Each mission has different directives that may require you to use a different ship than the one you may prefer. Colony Wars has a mind boggling number of missions. Over seventy, non-linear missions allow multiple paths and six different endings. You can finish the game by winning every mission, and you won't have played half of what the game has to offer.
