This is a quality amplifier that can be had for cents-on-the-dollar. I've had mine since new in 1990, only recently in 2012 have i had any trouble with it, the center channel output has become intermittent. It is noteworthy that compaired to current offerings the DE-935 is a real boat anchor (i.e. heavy). It does not have HDMI I/O's. It does have a single optical input. There is a kewl blue bar at the top-center above the display that lights up when the amp is decoding a Dolby Digital signal. The technology was way ahead of the times when these were built.
This is my 2nd STR-DE935 and i love my first one so much i had to buy it again. My first one was when i lived with my parents still with a full cerwin vega set up. I never came close to maxing this thing out and sounded amazing. The 2nd one is part of my onkyo HT-520 home theather i have it in a room 25x25 and it fills it to the brim with rich sound. There is so many inputs and out puts i could spend all day talking about them. But if your after a great home theater or for just music this thing will rock the house. If u can find one get it pleanty of power for the price, and more than enough imputs to keep u well hooked up.
I've had this receiver for over TEN years. It's been used with NHT super two fronts, super center, and super ones for surround channel and a Velodyne 10" sub. It's performed flawlessly that entire time. From Xbox, PS3 / Blu Ray, DVD, to playing music the DE935 has never had an issue of any kind. The audio quality from this particular unit is superb as well with eq settings often not found in much higher end units. I would say this is one of the best buys out there for 5.1 digital surround. Plenty of digital optical ports, but only one digital coaxial. NO HDMI. Pros: Excellent Sound Quality, Excellent Adjustment, Support of 5.1 DD and DTS - DVD and Blu Ray (via optical) sound amazing in 5.1 (to this day, still only a few movies in 7.1) Cons: NO HDMI (didn't exist!) - Nothing else really. Again, never had an issue with it.Read full review
I have had this receiver for about a month now and I am just getting to know all it's capabilities. It has all the power I'll ever need. I have it in a guitar studio and only use front speakers as it's not hooked up to any video equipment. I record with several different components and all the hook-ups are there EXCEPT ONE. The PHONO has in jacks but NO record out jacks. The signal on a turntable is too weak to plug directly into a recorder so a preamp is necessary. As of yet, I haven't figured out what I can do to solve the dilema. Other than that one small glitch, I love the Sony STR DE935 Receiver!!!!
This box is relatively cheap both because it is a discontinued model and because 5.1 stereo is obsolete. Plus it is a mass market brand. Audiophiles love to pay too much for obscure brands, the more obscure the better. They call such things "exotic", a euphemism for over-priced. The big advantage of these things is that they have a dynamic output of 235 watts per channel into 4 ohm speakers. Which means that one can drive Magnepans or Martin-Logans with them. And before anyone starts huffing and puffing about how much better separates and exotics are, I would remind the reader that every double blind comparison test ever done has shown there is no difference at all. For planar speakers one needs power and the Sony STR-DE935 has that, for not much money.
