One cannot help but think of terrorist attacks while watching Steven Spielberg's update of the classic sci-fi fantasy THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. While the H.G. Wells story dates back to 1898, and has inspired previous adaptations, this particular version feeds off its 21st century audience's fear of a terrorist-induced apocalypse. Even if the sight of tall buildings crumbling to the ground and crowds running fearfully away from their demise doesn't trigger post-9/11 paranoia, dialogue such as 'Is it the terrorists?' will. Disgruntled, divorced father Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is struggling to connect with his estranged kids, who have been dropped off by their mother for the weekend, when a severe and unusual lightning storm leaves his New Jersey neighbourhood powerless. Over the course of the next few hours, it becomes obvious that this was not a storm at all, but rather the first sign of a worldwide alien attack. Emerging from the ground in multi-legged tripod-like machines that have apparently been stored beneath the earth's surface since before man's time, these aliens begin the process of waging a long-planned war on our planet. While WAR OF THE WORLDS follows Ray's growing closeness with his two children (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin) in the face of imminent disaster, and his transformation from lousy father to hero, their story is used mostly as a vehicle for illustrating an unending series of horrific scenarios. The human element of the story is also briefly explored with Tim Robbins's portrayal of a crazed, alien-fighting recluse. Sticking closely to Wells' original descriptions of alien warfare, the film focuses mainly on visuals and succeeds through impressive special effects to create two hours of thrilling, frightening, realistic terror.

    Angry,shouty little man ruins good film.

    Oh no,they killed a classic but not all is lost. The plot is still good,the effects are great,the war machines are terrifying but its just a shame about the angry shouty little man(Tom Cruise) in the lead role who likes to lose the plot and shout 'Goddamn it!' a lot. Sadly,the producers seem to have turned it into a kids with issues film as well,the over riding 'we hate dad cos him and mommy split up' ruins the plot and detracts from the main story line so yeah all the screaming and shouting does ruin it. Anyway theres still lots of suspense,destruction,death,fire,things getting blown up by martian heat rays,panic,suspense,tension,atmosphere and like the original every one lives happy ever after. Give it a punt for a few quid but get the 1950s version,its much better.

    War of the Worlds 2005

    As remakes of classic films go, when this first came out I totally hated it. I recently watched it again & changed my mind about the film. It is after all a pretty good remake, keeping some of the classic quotes & of course, the special effects are much better than the 1952 film. The 1952 film also keeps its charms & is also worth watching in my humble opinion.

    Great film, great graphics, great acting. A must for any sci-fi fan.

    Of all the sci-fi movies out there this has got to be up there with the best, if not the best I've ever seen. Tom Cruise is excellent and compliments the movie and unlike some other sci-fi's there are no cheesy one liners that can sometimes make you cringe. The special effects are superb, breath taking at times giving the viewer an eye popping experience. It doesn't take long for the action to start and start it does. The first half of the movie is better than the second half but what a first half!! If you've never seen this movie then its an absolute must because this is another Steven Spielberg classic.
