This box set of four CDs and a VHS tape has a great deal of what made Stan Freberg famous. You'll find classics like "Green Chri$tma$," "John & Marsha," "St. George and the Dragonet," "Point of Order" and lots more. This set also has the previously-unreleased satires on Arthur Godfrey and Ed Sullivan that got the Capitol Records brass so worried about lawsuits that they kept them in the vaults for decades. Many of Stan's path-breaking comedy commercials are here, along with excerpts from his short-lived CBS Radio program, much of "Stan Freberg Presents The United States of America, Parts 1 and 2," the ads promoting the McGovern-Hatfield Amendment to end the Vietnam War, and newer material from the 1990s poking fun at everything from Elton John to the Monica Lewinsky scandal. It's a wide-ranging overview of Freberg's career, and also has an informative book that will give some background for those who weren't yet born when much of this was created. My only complaint about this set is that it was not on the market for very long, and I hope that Rhino will reissue it someday with a DVD instead of the now-old-technology VHS tape. Until that time comes, find a used copy and enjoy it; if there's ever been a time we needed laughs, it's now!Read full review
