Good Book
The book overall is well written and fast paced. It kept my attention, though some parts seemed a bit stretched, in the end it all made sense. I am a bit of a history buff and the historical insights were interesting, but I questioned the accuracy of some of it. (I knew the DaVinci Code was worse on this point. If you enjoyed the DaVinci Code then you will be right at home.)This is a good book to bring on vacation or just for fun reading. The love story was also a bit stretched, but I do not read books for reality. I like fantasy relationships in books. However, I see a conflict in the characters. I would not be so forgiving and I am not so sure that as strong as these characters are, they would be so forgiving either. The plot is well developed and the back and forth to the 1200s to ... The Da Vinci Code II: Da Vinci-er!
I never quite understood why "The Da Vinci Code" achieved the worldwide popularity that followed its publishing. I suppose that, like conspiracy theorists, everyone enjoys a good yarn that could possible upset the Catholic Church, still one of the richest and most powerful organizations on Earth. Yet from a literary standpoint, "The Da Vinci Code" has meager value. Dan Brown, like J.K. Rowling, is not an accomplished writer. What sets the latter apart is that Rowling knows how to tell a heck of a good story, and being able to so often forgives one's grammatical shortcomings. That having been said, it bothers me to no end that "The Da Vinci Code" has spawned not only worldwide success, but also a new (or perhaps newly popular) subgenre dealing with Church conspiracies. The book jacket states that author Raymond Khoury is a Hollywood screenwriter, but a quick search on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) reveals only three dismissible works to his credit (the poorly received adaptation of "Dinotopia," anyone?). Obviously, this should be a sign of things to come. "The Last Templar" works as nothing less than a children's novel, with chapters spanning one or two pages and always ending with a ridiculous cliffhanger. The characters are flat, static and poorly drawn -- Sean sleeps with Tess despite professing himself a devout Catholic throughout the book, even turning down a glass of wine "because it's Lent" -- and the dialogue is little better. In all, "The Last Templar" reads like a B- or even a C-film, a tradition with which Khoury is obviously familiar. "The Da Vinci Code" phenomenon finally seems to be waning. Newspapers are less interested in the latest Dan Brown news, and every direct-to-DVD documentary about the "real" Da Vinci code has found its way into the bargain bin. Hopefully the Church conspiracy subgenre will follow suit. Like the Templars themselves, "The Last Templar" would do well to disappear with history's passing.

Great Book!
This book was excellent and enthralling. The plot twists and characters were laid out wonderfully and I finished the book in just under a week because I could not put it down. Would have read it quicker if I hadn't gone to work each day. Khoury has offered a piece of historical fiction (accurate up to the destruction of the Knights by Phillip the Fair of France) revolving around the mystery of the last days of the Knights Templar and the final resting place of the Holy Grail. Apparently, suspense comes naturally to Khoury and he has the reader guessing until the final chapter. He uses the premise of an escaped Templar and a letter that he has left behind which points to the fate of the Templars and the decisions made during their final days. Present day finds the search renewed based on ... This book was excellent and enthralling. Despite many claims that this is a "Da Vinci Code" knock-off, Khoury had this concept long before Dan Brown and his story is more historically based and plausible than the far-fetched "Da Vinci Code". The characters are believable, flawed but valiant, and the villains are underworld types who thrive on carnage, destruction and the accumulation of wealth. Very well done. Khoury should continue writing, and should he do so, his future works should be eagerly anticipated by thriller, mystery and historical fiction lovers. Some people out there are claiming that this book is too much like the work of Dan Brown; I disagree. I enjoyed all 4 of Dan Brown's books, but they are not nearly as well written as this book. Dan Brown uses the story to carry the book where Khoury uses the book to lay out a rich, layered and complex story of historical, epic proportions. Don't be misled by people who write this off too easily. Just consider what they have written, how they have written it and how intelligently they make their argument. I'm not sure why the book has generated such negative reviews, but they are largely undeserved. This book is well worth the read and is a surprisingly fluid novel for a first time novelist. The story is of historical value, so people that claim that it is poorly written or cliche are not true historical fiction afficianado. This is a difficult genre and people are apparently misunderstanding what Khoury has done with this tale. I am a huge fan of historical fiction and of Templar history and this is by far the best Knights Templar fiction that I have read. Steve Berry's "The Templar Legacy" is a good contribution, but this is the best. So, if you want good historically based fiction, this is it. If you want outrageous, impossible or improbable stories based on one or two facts from history, you may want to look elsewhere. I thought this book was excellent and eagerly anticipate Khoury's next offering.

I enjoyed reading THE LAST TEMPLAR very much. Filled with intrigue, this thriller, adventure and romance novel held my interest from the beginning. The main characters each demonstrated a good sense of humor, which I find adds so much to any novel. I found it difficult to put the book down. I enjoyed the way Mr. Khoury moved back and forth between the historical accounts and the present day accounts of the mystery. I also liked the way it surprised me throughout the book, especially in the end. It is a wonderful debut novel, and I hope and expect to see many more from Mr. Khoury. A page turner and a quick read. The Last Templar
A fast paced tale that weaves the story of the Templars from the time of their establishment to today and how the mystery that surrounds their practices teases and tempts us to find problems and false solutions. The characters are quite believable. I enjoyed the female protagonist, however I felt that she was somewhat morally ambiguous in some of her actions. The FBI agent working the case of armed thievery at a New York museum blends real world concerns of faith with a skepticism that gives the reader time to ponder the vestiges and definition of God in today's world.
