4 stars, could use better tuners, a few minor nits but overall nice.
This is a nice guitar at it's price point. It is made in China and comes with no case. The recommended case is the Gretsch G6238FT, which is a perfect fit. That case is made by TKL. There is a more expensive "deluxe case" G6238 (no FT) that is about $50 more. It has a 1/4" wider bout, and is 1/4" thinner in depth. The guitar pickups (blacktop filtertrons) are decent. I wouldn't necessarily plan to replace them. The tuners are lame, and would benefit from upgrade. The quality of the output jack isn't great - on mine the instrument plug pops out 1/4" vs. seating flat in the jack. I'll be replacing that. The "thin U" neck is similar to a fender C or gibson 60's slim taper neck, just a little fatter, most noticable to me as you go up to the high notes. But still pretty accessible. This model, ... This model, and it's bigsby-less similar model the G5220, have a mahogony body and a walnut fretboard. The 5220 has broadtron pickups, and no bigsby and is about $100 cheaper. If you don't love the bigsby, you might consider that, although the colors are better currently on the 5230T. Overall, a nice guitar in the $500 range...you could easily spend $1000 if you add a case, upgrade pickups and tuning pegs, and possibly some electronics a modification to the bigsby. I bought mine used, but mint. The setup on mine was great, but may have been adjusted by the original owner.

Excellent instrument, nice workmanship and sound.
Just picked one up one week ago, I really like it. It feels like a nice blend of a Tele that allows you to play cords easily and an SG, light body with balls with a nice tone. Action and finish are FLAWLESS, the Chinese are making some quality instruments. I fought and put down Chinese products for a long time (this is only my second china ax) but recently I had to accept that for the price, these are an unbeatable value. I don't know how an American guitar can be better in look, feel, and sound at even double the price. The finish in this guitar is every bit as good as that of my good US-made Les Pauls and Strats. This is a "middle of the road" guitar, no fancy components, or finishes, just a very good 1K guitar that costs a lot less than that. I have heard that the tuners could ... Good Value and Quality
It can be difficult to find a good quality guitar at a decent price. This guitar is both. I also like the older style fret markers traditional to Gretsch. I also like getting back to the black filtertron pickups. TV Jones are more versatile but these filtertrons have that Gretsch twang. Yes, it is made in China but Gretsch sent their people from the USA to set up the quality control and these are every bit as good as the product from Korea. It can be difficult to find a good quality guitar at a decent price. This guitar is both. I also like the older style fret markers traditional to Gretsch.
