Notes
"In life there are sometimes memorable epiphanies that occasionally shed light into corners of our lives. When I went to Schenectady to appear with the Empire Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bill Meckley, the bright light of one of these epiphanies was awaiting my arrival within the embodiment of that wonderful orchestra. Their performance was dense with talent and spiri ... and anticipation, a necessary element in jazz. They sent music out into the medium of the air mercifully searching out waiting ears and hearts that were completely fulfilled ... including my own. Would that we had more like them." -Benny Golson "The EJO played my music very well. It was a love fest!" -Jimmy Heath "The Empire Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. William Meckley, is an exceptional ensemble in the top tier of professional big bands. They take their art seriously, enjoy what they do and you can see it in the response they get from audiences. I know; I've had the pleasure of performing with them and standing in front of their huge wall of sound as guest conductor. They are a great cultural asset and will help keep Jazz vital for new generations to come." -Brent Fischer Grammy®-winning Producer, Composer, Arranger Director of the Clare Fischer Bands "The Empire Jazz Orchestra is a well rehearsed and extremely seasoned ensemble which can handle any style of music.' -Randy Brecker "Th e Empire Jazz Orchstra is an organization of highly skilled, world-class musicians. I was truly impressed with their ability to successfully handle a broad scope of musical styles. BRAVO EJO!" -Rufus Reid "Bill Meckley has assembled a great ensemble that is totally wonderful to play with!' -Lew Soloff Accentuate The Positive: Albany Times Union Review: What a swinging breath of fresh air! The new CD of live music by the Empire Jazz Orchestra, the ensemble-in-residence at Schenectady County Community College, certainly lives up to it's name, 'Accentuate the Positive.' Right from the first easy beats of the Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer classic, 'Accentuate the Positive,' arranged by Billy May, the tone is set that this disc will be not only fun but also rewarding. Vocalist Coleen Pratt has just the right kind of vocal strength in 'Accentuate' to growl at the lower registers and glide to the higher ones, a great complement to the big brassy sound of the Empire Jazz Orchestra. 'I thought a lot about the disc title, and wanted to have a positive one,' SCCC School of Music Dean William Meckley wrote in a recent email exchange. 'Also, I was very happy with the performance on that selection, especially Colleen's great singing. I thought it would be a good opener that would get folks to continue listening.' The disc, produced by Meckley and co-produced by the SCCC Foundation, features a wonderful array of music by Clare Fischer ('The Duke'), Mary Lou Williams ('Walkin' and Swingin'' from 1936, and 'Scorpio' from 1946), Thelonious Monk ('Monk's Point') and even Oliver Nelson's major three-movement work, 'Sound Piece for Jazz Orchestra.' 'The selections were chosen, basically, as representing some of the best live recordings of the band,' Meckley said. 'I also tried to have a good cross section of the various styles we play, including historically important music like the Mary Lou Williams selections and the Oliver Nelson Sound Piece.' Meckley conducts the Empire Jazz Orchestra, a group that features numerous SCCC music faculty members and alumni, including Brett Wery, Brian Patneaude, Cliff Brucker and Keith Pray (Classs of '93). Of note is that this disc sounds great. It was mixed and mastered by SCCC alumnus and faculty member Sten Isachsen (Class of '89) at Bender Studios in Delmar. Also of note, and this doesn't have that much to do with the music but it does speak to the care of putting this disc together, is that the graphic design work on the CD cover is excellent. It's hip and lively and does what a group like the Empire Jazz Orchestra does well
