These are two of my favorite games, I’ve Spent hours playing these classic games. Final Fantasy 4 is my Favorite, first FF game I beat I think. Compellingnstory of redemption as you start out as the Dark Knight Ceacil, and takes you to the stars, while keeping the crystal mythology of 4 elements. Let’s you play every character instead of benching the ones you don’t like. Well written, with an ark for your companions. What new Final Fantasy titles lack these days, it’s, the simplicity and can be beaten in a good length of time, with more simple side quests. I miss turn based like that. Like FF12 was a good balance of turn based and Chronotrigger style of avoiding bad guys. Chrinotrigger. Art beautifully drawn by Akira Toriyama, going back and forward in time, epic compelling cool characters with vast endings, and memorable side quests that change your adventure each time you play. Beautiful construction of games and story telling that I wish was applied to the new games of this genre and SquareEnix overall. Go back to the roots, and make something like this again. I don’t want to waste my time like FFXIII and FFXV. They are gorgeous games, hard for me to get Submersed in it and some of the stuff is just super silly with making you do to much and takes so long to complete the story.Read full review

Like 1999's Final Fantasy Anthology, which saw the release of Final Fantasies V and VI, Chronicles is a repackaging of two of Square's greatest triumphs from the golden 16-bit era--here, Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger make their return. But in the 21st century, when games are as often based on polygons as plot, can a couple of good old 2D epics make a new mark? The answer depends largely on your perspective. Informed gamers will know Final Fantasy IV was originally released in the United States in 1991 as a scaled back and poorly translated Final Fantasy II. In addition to realigning the title of the game with subsequent releases, Square has remade Final Fantasy IV into the game it should have been 10 years ago. To begin with, the game's text has been retranslated; gone is the simplistic and sometimes broken English of the Super NES version. The new translation also gives us vastly deeper insight into the characters and plot than we ever got before--Cecil's struggle with the nature of his dark knighthood is much more fully developed, for instance. This translation has thankfully been applied to the original Japanese edition of Final Fantasy IV instead of the dumbed-down "Easy Type" version that was originally released in the States. American gamers finally have a chance to see, in English, all the missing items, battle commands, and other removed features that they missed out on the first time. Final Fantasy IV is one of the most iconic in the series, and Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest games of all time. Having them both in one package with added cutscenes, the latter game having animation from Akira Toriyama, is amazing. I think this is the definitive way to play these, along with the originals, because they aren’t redone like the DS or iPhone versions of the Final Fantasy games.

This particular version is a so so play game. I rated 5 star for playing as it was supposed to. Game controls, graphics, and load times, destroy this port. But it is because of poor crossover to Playstation., from SNES. But it plays like they wanted it to, so????

Here we have Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger ported to Playstation. I played both to no end as a kid and still have Chrono Trigger. I'm sure not many will agree with me, but I think the originals were better. I'll make this short. There's no sense in going into great detail since for the most part these games are essentially the same games. *PROS* FFIV --it looks like they re-translated the game and left all of the items in from the original Japanese hard-type (there were two diff. versions in Japan) thus allowing the game to be more mature and more of a challenge than the original --they didn't leave out the two-player mode like they did in the original US version both -slightly smoother graphics -you get to play classic games on a newer system (barely a pro) -they *tried* to improve the games by adding new PS quality cutscenes -each have a few misc. extra features *CONS* FFIV --the sound effects were poorly sampled, they used the same sound effects (which is cool), but they sound all "boxed-in" like they are playing over a phone or were recorded by sticking a bad mic in front of the TV --the cutscenes seem ridiculous, out of place and unnecessary in context to the rest of the games SNES graphics Chrono Trigger --the intro was replaced, the original was fine except for a mis-spelling ("directer") --there is a 3-5 second pause (load time?) between the beginning and end of each battle, switching to and from the options menu, going from a dungeon/house/etc. to the overworld map, and so on and so on... This slows the pace considerably over time, which makes playing this version unbearable to me --the music is mixed differently (instrument-wise). I recall one song in particular had string parts that could barely be heard on the PSX version, but was mixed perfectly on the original. this affects the mood a bit, which sucks. Well, that's what I think. This could have been awesome but it's mearly "meh." If you like these games track down the originals. These versions simply don't cut the mustard if you are like me and cherish the original SNES versions in all their 16-bit glory.Read full review

This gem is the re-issue of two old SNES games for the Playstation, Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger. I enjoyed these classic RPG's very much - now for more detailed reviews of the games: Final Fantasy IV was originally released as Final Fantasy II here in the USA. The story follows the adventures of Cecil, commander of the famed Red Wings squadron of airships and a Dark Knight in the service of the King of Baron. Those who have mostly played the later Final Fantasies, especially VII, VIII, and X, will find the character creation system in this game to be different. As the game progresses, you will be joined by several different characters who rotate in and out of your party, and each has his or her own unique abilities. So, there is not a lot of room for character customization. Final Fantasy IV also introduced the Active Time Battle (ATB) system to the series. Basically, in this game, each character has a time bar that fills up according to the character's Speed stat. When the bar fills up, the character is able to take an action. The enemies have ATB bars also, but you can't see them. So you will need to plan your strategies carefully. As to Chrono Trigger, this game is not part of the Final Fantasy series, though it is from the same company that produced those games. Chrono Trigger follows the story of Chrono, a young man who is good friends with Lucca, the local inventor. CT is different from most RPGs in that instead of traversing a large world to discover new places, this world is much smaller and the new discoveries come in the form of time travel. There are several different eras that you will visit in the course of playing this game, ranging from the mists of prehistory to the far future. As in FF IV, each character in the game has his or her own unique abilities, with certain characters being more "Tank" types and others leaning more towards magic use. However, in this game, you have a little more control over who is in your party at one time. Also, each character has certain "Tech" abilities. Different characters can create powerful Double or Triple Tech attacks when working as a team, thus allowing for many different attacking strategies, depending on the party's composition. Depending on your actions in the game, you will get one of a dozen or so different endings. The different endings enhance the replayability of this game quite a bit. The Chronicles version also contains several new anime cutscenes. Overall, this is a truly excellent game, with a lot of nice surprises and features. Highly, highly recommended.Read full review
