About this product

Product Information

Eric Newby escapes through a hospital window to become a POW on the run in Italy in 1943. With the Nazis moving in from the North and no certain way back to England, his situation appears grim. But with the help of local farmers and villagers, who risk their lives to shelter him, he survives. Hiding in shepherds' buts and even a cave, he achieves three precious months of freedom - and meets the determined and courageous young woman who would become his wife. Love and War in the Apennines in an intimate account of the horror and surrealism of war, and of the heroism and selflessness of those caught up in its madness. Eric Newby creates an unforgettable record of the resilience of human nature in the face of despair, and forcefully reminds us of the pointlessness of war.

  • Debunks the myth of Italian cowardice - a gripping tale of bravery to save an English soldier

An autobiographical tale of a 22 year old on the run from the Germans in wartime Italy - a story well told, with bravery, characters, excitement, hardship and a bit of romance. The language is of its era, but still an engrossing read.

  • Gripping read

This book came quickly in great condition. This true story concerns a British soldier sent on a dangerous mission to destroy German planes on an Italian airfield who gets captured and then escapes to the Appenine mountains. He is helped by the local Italians to hide from the Germans and his account of his adventures and the life of the local people in the Appenines is riveting. Having just been to the area where this took place (my tour guide recommended the book) I found the whole story very moving and realized how brave the Italians in this mountainous region were.

  • A good read

A very interesting book full of wonderful descriptions of the part of Italy I had no previous information about and a detailed account of how the author survived through dreadful circumstances.
