Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper is the first of Frogwares’ series surrounding the eponymous detective available on Xbox. This is a crime solving puzzle game that has you walk through various parts of London, primarily Whitechapel, collecting clues and piecing together evidence around the ripper murders. The graphics are very poor on the Xbox 360 and look more like something you’d expect on a B-list game for the original Xbox. As this is a port of a PC game, you can toggle between run and walk; there is no progressive speed relative to how you move your joystick. The dialog is generally well written, although the voice acting leaves something to be desired. The game feels extremely dated for a title launched in 2009. This is also one of the extremely few Xbox 360 titles that cannot be installed on the hard drive, so expect to listen to the noisy disc drive throughout your playthrough and don’t be surprised when you experience a few crashes - the game does not autosave, so save often! The real meat of the game is well thought out and delivered through many types of puzzles and the compiling of evidence to identify Jack the Ripper. Some are easy, some are hard, but all are engaging and serve to move the plot forward. If you are well read in the ripper murders and the historical context, you will find that the story does an excellent job remaining faithful to the facts with some artistic liberties; in no way does the game deviate from the canonical five murders and it links in a few others that Jack the Ripper was suspected of committing. The team did their homework to put together a strong delivery, despite the numerous technical shortcomings of this game. I wish the game was more graphic; I feel that it really is teetering between a Teen and Mature rating for the descriptive conversations and autopsy reports, which focus heavily on the mutilation of female genitalia (as was true to the ripper murders). Although the development team did a good job toning down the gore while getting the point across, I feel that this is one game where gore would have actually enhanced the gameplay. The historical crimes were truly disturbing, so it was well within the developers’ rights to recreate that detail in Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper. This is not the strongest of Frogwares Sherlock Holmes series, but it is worthy of a play through if you are familiar with newer entries in the series (Devil’s Daughter, Crime and Punishment, etc). It is also a must play if you have an interest in the ripper murders. At an average price of $15 (including shipping), it is a little steep when compared against many AAA titles on the Xbox 360 (Skyrim, Modern Warfare, etc) that can be had for under $10, but I feel that I got my money’s worth and would recommend this game. I bought this product from overseas. The region and locale were wrong and I couldn't play this game. I tried to research this problem with no resolution. I wasted my money. How many other people had this same problem and don't speak up?
