    Dell R420 E5-2440, 64GB RAM, 4 Bay

    Pros * Very quiet for a 1U. A box can could drown it out * Redundant PSUs (optional feature) * Dedicated iDRAC port * BIOS/UEFI has great menu functionality and doesn't require a reboot to get to different config menus Cons * Fans can be aggressive to spin up/spin down which makes the noise more noticable than it needs to be * H310 is limited, you may be interested in upgrading to the H710 although beware you will lose the ability to set Non-RAID drives in the H710 * Limited internal storage expansion options if you go with the 4-Bay unit. You must use a PCIe adapter to add M.2 storage, there really aren't any other options.

    r420

    good server, extremely quiet, powerful enough to run a few VMs for a home server. I would recommend this totally over an r410 or r710, it will be much quieter, have a better Idrac, and have better single threaded performance.
