As a hiker and backpacker for many decades I've always filtered my water throughout the countless miles I loved my MSR Waterworks filter with its red top & bottom and it's smoky center section, I went through three replacement filters which will help explain the amount of water I filtered with it throughout the many years, I do remember it was relatively slow, so I replaced it with MSR Hyperflow if for no other reason than it's name "Hyperflow" I used it for many years, went through many replacement filters, it is much faster than my Waterworks, Then MSR came out with their newest and greatest MSR Guardian water filter, I was a bit reluctant to purchase one because it is of the exact same design configuration as the Waterworks so I did a lot of reading and watched MSR's YouTube video of several of their engineers going on a trip overseas and filtered all the water that they all consumed throughout their trip which I'm sure was 'A Lot Of Water,' I've been there done that, so I found much lower costs on eBay and was lucky enough to purchase my new Guardian filter for far less, From the first Nalgene bottle I filled averaging only 'fifteen pumps of its handle which is of course much faster than my Waterworks and Hyperflow, with no more backwashing or changing the red and black one way valves because the Guardian cleans itself with each pump, my Guardian 'did not leak one drop!' While I haven't had a totally dirty water source yet I feel the MSR Engineers in the video proves the Guardian is by far the world's best designed and manufactured filter on the market today, of course I will keep both of my MSR filters if for no other reason than their sentimental value and my countless experiences with each one, neither of them can hold a candle compared to the Guardian self-cleaning water filter.Read full review

MSR guardian is expensive. But other filters of lessor cost do not meet the build quality, flow rate or water purity levels. if you need a good product there are few options. This or the also expensive Katadyn Pocket (plus iodine or chem tabs) is what you buy. I have bought used and broke the rest of the lower tier products. Hiker pro iodine matrix is not shelf stable and leaks out. So back to chem tabs. Flow rate of this unit, MSR guardian makes it effective for a small group or whole family. ongoing continuous 10% back flush is an awesome feature. 10,000 liter filter life compared to Hiker and Hike Pro 750-1150 liters units makes up for cost alone. you would have to buy 8 to 14 filters for the hiker/Pro at $50 each and for that cost you could have one or two more MSR Guardians.

Great product got it fast! One funny thing was that not only did this product came in the box but also a pencil and a round rubber ring of some sort. I’m guessing both things got put in the package by mistake.
