There's a reason the RE20 is found in every recording studio and radio-station around. This is the absolute best mic for quick voice-over work. I use it with a Grace M101 pre-amp and my voice sounds incredible. Clean and pure. I should have bought one years ago.It puts my more expensive mics to shame. Just wow!

The Ev PL-20, like it's sister the RE-20, is one of the finest broadcast and recording studio mics to ever hit the stage. There is a reason almost any professional studio has them on hand. It's signature sound quality, used by radio and studio musicians worldwide, as well as it's built-like-a-tank enclosure will take decades of use and still come out on top. This mic is still the defacto-standard by which all others are judged. You can spend more, but why? I can attest to the fact that the PL20 and the RE20 are exactly the same mic, except for color. I would advise anyone who owns and uses this mic to properly maintain it. The sound produced by this mic relies heavily on the condition of the foam that suspends and protects the element itself, and every decade or so should be replaced, earlier if abused. I've been building RE20 microphones since 2006 and am the former wired mic tech for EV. Lincoln Microphone LLC rebuilds failed RE20 elements and also has foam for those who prefer DIY.

I bought this mic for recording my alto sax at home and I really like its warm sound easily compared to really expensive condenser mics. Its frequency response is rather flat and wide for the dynamic and the result I get needs minimum EQing and sits in the mix perfectly. Really worth the money.

On it for a second it was instantly the best microphone I've ever heard my voice through I've been playing and singing since I was a child 30 years later I own one of these I'm glad to have it as one of the centerpiece microphones at my studio for vocals, acoustic to guitar and some drums. Not to mention that it is one of the two industry standard microphones that people use in the pro studios around the world. The other being the SM 7B. The RE20 has been a studio standard for decades. These things sound great, they’re durable, and they’re affordable when you can find a deal. One issue is they have very low output levels. You will need a professional quality preamp or use a gain booster like the Cloudlifter or FetHead.

This is a solid microphone. If you're recording and running your mic through processing, you really don't need to spend a ton to get a good mic. I'd recommend spending on your interface vs. your mic. I have this mic running into a UAD Apollo Twin and it sounds great. I have another $100 Blue mic running into it and it sounds great too. Is there a HUGE difference between the too? Not really. The Blue mic actually sounds pretty good, hotter and more high end. The difference is this mic "sits in the mix" so to speak. I don't know why exactly, but I don't have to spend time fussing with it as much as the other mic, which means more time working on other things. I have a low voice and very much appreciate this mics bass rolloff, low proximity effect and built-in pop filter. All around great buy.Read full review
