Who watches the watchmen? This comic book has become a ground breaking legend since the moment of it's release, deconstructing the superhero narrative while also challenging many other conceptions that often are taken for granted and left unchecked, All done with sympathy and sensitivity, which has been since known to be the trademark of Alan Moore's writing. There are deep political, moral and sexual notions inter wined in the story as well as philosophical notions of time, which are examined. Much has been said about this book so I won't go further. I will comment though on the respectful hard cover-slipcase edition that has been made for the absolute edition. There are comic books, which are just as consumable as newspapers, you read once and then you wait for the next and never look back. But ever so often there are some pieces of literature which stand out, both graphically and literary and this is one of them. In Europe there is a long tradition of hardcover graphic novels (often soft covers are less accessible), where the presentation of the book reflects the esteemed content. So it is a pleasure to read and rediscover this book in it's over sized richly colored edition. There are many details that come out as a result that in the regular edition you often pay less attention or just over look. The extra content in the end of this edition, shouldn’t be neglected, giving access to 'behind the scene' material, the ideas behind the plot and characters as well of a taste to the script writing capabilities of Alan Moore. Not every graphic novel is worth the extra cash for such a deluxe edition, but this is by far one that makes the book shine more than ever. The quality of the thick paper, the hardcover bound and the slipcase will guarantee that it will last many re-readings. At the time of this review it was still possible to find copies under $50. But they are becoming increasingly hard to find as they are out of print and the prices are just getting higher.Read full review
One of the ten greatest graphic novels of all time has been released in DC's "Absolute Edition" format--oversized books with "remastered" and restored art and notes from the creators included--and the result is exactly as stunning as you would think. "Watchmen" is the greatest of the super-hero epics, and I bought this collection hoping to get even more out of a further reading--and was not disappointed. The detail in Gibbons' art, much like that of George Perez in "The Crisis on Infinite Earths," is so precise and full of "goodies" that it really deserved--and needed--the Absolute treatment. Well worth the cost!
I just got Watchmen: Absolute Edition in the mail and I must say it is a great buy. The oversized, hardcover book comes in a slip case and features recolored pages and a thread tassle to mark your place in the book. I decided to buy this because I knew I wanted a copy of Watchmen and figured I might as well go all out and get the Absolute Edition. This is truly a great buy and I recommend it to any Watchmen fan out there.
Gritty. Harsh. Shocking. Subtle. Watchmen captures the imagine like no comicbook ever before. In fact, the story more resembles a novel than a superhero comic, and this particular collection is packed with oodles of extras for true fans! Someone's killed the Comedian. Doc Manhattan's been exiled. Someone tried to assassinate Ozymandias. Rorschach's been framed. Someone's out to eliminate the masks, and and every plot twist leading up to the astonishing revelation, jars you in your seat. Who watches the Watchmen? If you're smart, you will be. BUY THIS BOOK!
