We have had Brother HL-2040 printers before. In all previous cases we bought them new. Unfortunately they have been discontinued. Sellers of new HL-2040s are charging about $500. I searched for a lightly used printer and found this one for $120. It had been refurbished and cannot be distinguished from a new printer.

I was replacing this printer with the same make and model I had. The printer worked well but I was disappointed that the toner cartridge was almost empty and did not print clearly. The cartridge was also an off brand I never heard of so I bought a new Brother printer cartridge and now the print quality is excellent. I thank my lucky stars that I had the printer cable from my old HL-2040 because one was not included with the printer.

very cheap plastic monochrome laser printer. all plastic fittings are weak. as long as you treat it gently it will last a long time. easy to clear paper jams. single sheet feeder sliders don't stay in place. This printer can use the standard CUPS network printer driver. works with all operating systems even if the specs don't list it. The toner cartridges are easy to refill using generic black laser toner. Ours is more than 7 years old.

The printer often (always) thinks it has no paper. If I insert a single page and turn it on the side, it often works. Despite that, the price was so great. A printer that prints at all for $40.00 is a bargain. The printed pages look great. I had a similar problem with that exact model. The one I bought was replacing it so I could use the three inks cartridges I have ($120.00 of ink).
I bought this unit as most users rated it well on various Net sites, and I really liked the design--it looks like a miniaturized laser printer, and not a hybrid laser/inkjet with the feed paper jetting out (and getting exposed to dirt and dust). The integrated paper drawer was a big plus for me! Besides looking great, this printer is sooo SMALL... I've found the text output fabulous--as good as any laser I've seen. Graphics and photos are okay for personal use, and since that's what this printer is made and marketed for, this unit should serve single users on a personal level quite well. It also works fast--waking from sleep within 2 seconds after I press PRINT, and giving me the first print out in within 12-15 seconds. I have experienced none of the power surge issues a few others have mentioned with this unit--I think this must be an issue regarding individual electrical wiring within homes/offices (as my apartment is old and has had issues with some other appliances, but NOT with this Brother printer)...? The only problem is the paper curling, but it's not THAT big of an issue, particularly for letter and correspondence that will be folded in the end.Read full review
I've used an HL-2040 for at least 12 years and recently added another. The fact that is has both a USB printer port and a serial printer port allows me to use it with older computers and software as well as current equipment. It does a nice job and just continues to chug away without calling attention to itself.

We were so excited to get a laser printer we forgot to see if it had a copier on the thing. My husband uses the copier more so than the printer.
