After years of celebrating rock & roll culture and making gamers feel like guitar gods, Activision turns its attention to hip-hop pioneers like Kool Herc and Grand Wizard Theodore by offering players more than 80 original mixes to blend, juggle, and scratch in DJ Hero. Featuring a variation of the "note highway" mechanic popularized by Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and incorporating a turntable-and-mixer peripheral controller, DJ Hero finds gamers manipulating a crossfader and effects knob with one hand, while using the other hand to press three gameplay buttons located atop a fully rotatable faux record. Instead of increasing difficulty by making players account for more buttons, DJ Hero begins to incorporate more scratching and crossfader movement in an attempt to foster a more authentic feel.

Developer FreeStyleGames worked closely with world-renowned artists DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip, DJ AM, and Cut Chemist to create a realistic experience, and all four DJs contributed original mixes and mash-ups. DJ Hero also features DJ Jazzy Jeff and Grandmaster Flash as playable characters, but the game does not mine its track list solely from the world of hip-hop, featuring portions of more than 100 individual songs from artists such as Marvin Gaye, Beck, Nirvana, Daft Punk, and Tears for Fears. The game takes players to a variety of locations designed to mimic real-life party hotspots, and gamers looking for multiplayer action can hook up multiple controllers for competitive "DJ vs. DJ" mode, or the co-operative "DJ + DJ" and "DJ + Guitar" modes.

The "Renegade Edition" comes packaged with a "Renegade Turntable Controller," a hard carrying case that converts into a DJ stand, and a two CDs featuring music from Eminem and Jay-Z.

solid, but not as great as rock band

This is released by ACTIVISION in 2009 in hopes to be a hit like guitar hero or rock band. It uses a turntable device to imitate a real DJ. I recommend this for anyone that is very coordinated and has video gaming experience. Anyone that has a hard time or beginner is going to have a difficult time fully appreciating this game. The music however is very entertaining. You can also unlock music and have add ons. The beats are very good. You will get tired of this game after 4-5 hours. Overall it is 4/5 stars. Great game overall if you like rap/hip hop and guitar hero. fuses the two wonderfully. the special edition is where its at, as the turntable is noticeably nicer as well as the stand it comes with is incredible. overall very happy with this. there are so many songs it comes with i am still working on beating it! Like the music that inspired it, DJ Hero allows players to experience music in a new revolutionary way through through its game-specific controller. Included with the DJ Hero software, the DJ Hero controller is a combination turntable and mixer that immerses you into authentic DJ culture allowing you to scratch, cross-fade, and beat match. The turntable half of the controller features three color-coated buttons used to direct action during gameplay and a realistically rotating turntable. The opposite end of the controller contains the mixer controls in the form of a lateral fader allowing for switching between tracks and mixing, a knob for additional effects and a button for capturing "euphoria," a star power-like point bonus. In addition, the mixer portion of the controller detaches to accommodate left-handed players and contains an out of the way compartment holding a D-pad and conventional controller buttons for easy console navigation. Great Music Game.
This game is GREAT! If you played any of the Guitar Heros or Rock Band, you will absolutely love this game. It's not that hard to learn. There's only 3 turntable buttons, a crossfade slider, a euphoria button, and an effects dial to use along with regular controller buttons. Also, there are some surprise stars featuring Daft Punk, DJ AM, and Grandmaster Flash. If you haven't tried this, than you really should.

The way I see it, Eminem endorses the item. Eminem is caucasian, like Chuck Norris. Chuck Norris is white and has an amazing beard similar to another very famous light skinned white person, Jesus! Jesus was a product of God! So, basically, God endorses this item! Why wouldn't you acquire it? This is truly an awesome item! Bought the item, just because I finally got tired of the traditional controller type games, and I remember it displayed at a local Fry's Electronics. I played it for like 5mins and fell in love. Songs vary from different eras and genres, which makes it a bit relative to everyones taste. I love this game because it is a cheap and personal way to bring out the DJ in yourself. With practice, after a while, the shy videogame DJ inside of you will come out and play at little get togethers with friends, just like guitar hero and rock band. Different settings from beginner to expert. The tutorial is a MUST! Really helpful on understanding on how to move up the awesomesauce ladder. Obviously this game, like EVERY SINGLE GAME OUT THERE (including COD, Halo, Super Mario, Guitar Hero) is not for everyone. However, it was and is for me.
