About this product

Product Information

Avengers assemble! The Mandarin and his associates, The Red Skull, The Wizard, Crossbones and Ultron, have subdued and kidnapped Iron Man and The Vision, leaving Captain America and Hawkeye to trek across the US and rescue them. With the assistance of Wasp, our two Marvel Comics heroes will find a larger plot unfolding throughout their mission.

Through 25 side-scrolling levels, Captain America and Hawkeye will journey from city to city, including Miami, Charleston, New York and Richmond, fighting their way through mazes of scaffolds above pits of flame, streets filled with rushing river canals, and a gaggle of Mandarin's thugs blocking their way.

Cities are selected via an overhead map of the US; lines intersect to cities and along the way, Red Alert sequences can impede your way. Represented by a spinning blade, these sequences force you to fight your way through a barrage of foes, or single, powerful enemy to continue forward.

Each city requires you collect all the key crystals necessary to disable the forcefield blocking the exit or take on its appropriate boss, while all are filled with a wide variety of foes and dangers. Missiles-firing GiGis hover about, attempting to blast you, gun-toting soldiers fire from windows or platforms, automated guns open fire, while hazards such as pits of flame, beds of spikes, disappearing platforms, laser barriers and more litter the levels.

In addition to key crystals, containers are scattered about, yielding power-ups, hearts, power stones and extra lives when struck. Power-ups allow you to increase the strength of your attack, while power stones increase the maximum amount of life you can possess.

Captain America is armed with his Vibranium and Adamantium alloy composite shield, which he can use to block enemy fire from any direction, toss at foes to do damage, perform a rushing tackle or land atop water, spikes and foes with. Hawkeye wields his trademark bow and quiver of arrows, allowing him to attack foes across the screen and at any angle.

When you increase your attack power, you also gain different abilities -- Captain America's shield will boomerang back and forth instead of being of being caught upon return, while Hawkeye will be able to fire more arrows at once. Both characters have certain attributes making them favorable for certain situations.

Captain America can grasp onto bars, but his shield can only be thrown horizontally in a limited range, while Hawkeye can't hang from bars, but can fire in multiple angles across the screen. Both heroes have the ability to punch foes at close range, perform a jump kick in mid-air and jump onto platforms and other objects.

In addition to the standard story mode, a battle mode is included allowing you to duke it out with a friend one-on-one, the first player as Captain America or Hawkeye, and the second as a villain, including Crossbones, The Wizard and Ultron.

  • average gameplay, fun collector for comic fans

I would give this game an average rating for graphics and gameplay given the time period of its release. Comic fans will enjoy playing some of their favorite Avenger characters in 8-bit. The variety of how each character is used is unique but obvious and quick to learn. One other minor factor that makes it different from any sidescroller is the Bionic Commando style of level selection. It shakes up the mundanity of the "repeat" feeling of most NES action games. I loved adding this game to my collections to show off to friends, but I am not putting in hours of gameplay.
