A common man's point of view.
This is really my favorite "Giselle". At present I have six versions, this being my first. I have reviewed the La Scala version if you want to read it. This is not filmed in front of a live audience but filmed on a sound stage, so there is no applause nor the sound of tiny little feet on the stage, but because it was filmed on a sound stage there is opportunity for some good special effects in the "Wilis" second act scenes. Karen Kain and Frank Augustyn are a perfect couple to dance the lead rolls in this ballet. They gained national attention in Canada by winning a Silver Medal, dancing the Bluebird PDD from "The Sleeping Beauty" in a dance competition in Russia several years ago. Karen is a very beautiful woman and she was not too old to fit the part of a young girl looking for a ... This is really my favorite "Giselle". At present I have six versions, this being my first. The first act is all about this falling in love with a mysterious and handsome man, and the jealousy it causes in Hilarion, a local villager who is madly in love with Giselle, but whose love is not returned. When Hilarion challenges Albrecht and at the same time Albrecht's fiance shows up in the village, and Giselle learns of Albrecht's deceit she "looses it", so to speak, and goes mad in her grief. Karen's acting in the famous "mad scene" is the best I've seen in the six versions I have. She is very convincing as she re-lives the happier moments of her life and gradually falls into a state of shock that takes all of her vitality (she has a weak heart to begin with). She picks up Albrecht's sword and stabs herself with it, (an act which is not part of the original versions of Giselle) and was not needed here, because Karen showed that she could easily have died of a broken heart. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cry when she dies. These are the best sets I've seen in my six versions. The houses in the village (act one) look like real houses and not just painted on canvas. The Forrest scene (act two) are real trees covered with what appears to be ice or snow or cobwebs and extremely eerie. Fog rolls in from a very realistic lake or river in the background and covers the stage to make the appearance of the Wilis even more eerie as it appears they are emerging out of the mist. Hilarion, who the Wilis "capture" first is scared out of his wits when he first sees these "ghosts". After all it is midnight and in the deep woods where the Wilis capture their victims and force them to dance themselves to death. Their "victims" are men who have betrayed their brides, who die of broken hearts before their wedding nights. They are always in white gowns signifying wedding gowns, of course. When 18 to 24 (or more) beautiful women all dressed in white ankle length gowns are on stage in arabesque poses it is a beautiful sight to behold. It is worth the cost of this ballet just to see them hopping on one foot in the arabesque position, three lines opposing each other, to Adolphe Adams music. I watch this over and over, it is so beautiful. You can find this ballet for around $20.00 if you search for it. It is worth every penny at double that. If you love "Giselle" already or have never seen the ballet (which was the case with me, when I first saw her) get this version by the The National Ballet of Canada. When I bought this ballet, I was looking for Sleeping Beauty. This copy was offered with Sleeping Beauty AND Giselle on one disc, so I bought it not realizing just how magnificent Giselle was. I promise you won't be disappointed.
