I treasure all the volumes in this set, but I was missing book 5. It has been out of print for a long time, at least it was out the last time I checked. Anyone who loves Appalachian history and culture should have these books on the shelf. I refer to them often.

Trying to complete my collection of the original editions of Foxfire books. All great content and a treasure of lost knowledge. Foxfire 5 features blacksmithing, iron making and flintlock rifles. Living in North Carolina, I am also interested in bears, although I do not think I would ever go bear hunting. I recommend you get all editions of Foxfire and treasure them on your bookshelf!

I have been collecting the Foxfire Book series for several years and each one is compelling in its own right. However, having the entire collection up to this point, (12 Volumes) gives and entire new meaning to knowing about "Just Plain Living", and how to survive with very little. What started out as a class assignment in an Appalachia high school has become a valuable lesson in life itself. I would recommend this series highly to researchers, history buffs and survivalists alike.

I grew up in a small town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula surrounded by the forest. I remember a lot of the old timers, a bunch of characters for sure! I do consulting work at times and also work with some Amish friends as they take me back to my younger years in how they do things! I am purchasing most of the Foxfire books for their use. It is always interesting to see how the old timers did things with so little. The Amish are much the same. Many of the Amish lead an idealic lifestyle, but not all. Some have the freedom from the bondage of religion and others are in bondage to it. Freedom is knowing Christ as your Savior, very simplistic and thruthfully. They best describe how, why and what the principles were that our country was founded upon. That comes out in the Foxfire series of books. They will glean much information from these books.Read full review
I bought this book because I have the previous four in the series and I enjoyed browsing through them. This one contains information about guns, hunting bears, making iron and being a blacksmith. This information is not necessary to live our lives today but they contain interesting information about how some people lived at one time and some of these peaple still exist and may still use some of this information. This book is still sold by major bookstores. The new ones have been reprinted and have new, updated book covers.
A picture of my great, great, great grandfather is in this book under the section on flintlock rifles.

The Foxfire books teach us about a time and place where people lived simply and used what they had at hand to survive. The people of the Appalachains were a hearty and hard working group of people who's roots go deep into the history of the building of this country. They played just as hard as they worked. They also have a sense of community seldom seen today. Many of the recipes have been handed down many generations and give a whole new meaning to the phrase "made from scratch". There is such a wealth of information on the "how to's" of almost every part of country living it is astounding to me that we all live such a wasteful life style. I highly recommend these books for many reasons. You will find your own reasons to collect them all. Connie Williams-Devlin
Foxfire 5 reminds me of things of the past that my grandfather taught me or told me about. As he came over here in 1910 at the age of 13. Things were different at that time and you had to be self sufficient and do things yourself just to get by. I have a small shop set up and can do and make most of the things seen in the book. I enjoy making things. Having the time to do these things is a problem sometimes. I have some of the oldtimers come over to have me make or repair things that they cannot get done anywhere else. Some of the things are quite challenging. It's really a shame that I don't have anybody that I can pass my knowledge on to.
Love these books, lots of information about old ways. Good reading, thanks
