About this product

Product Information

Author Patrick Suskind enjoys a career shrouded in Salinger-esque mystery. Suskind's best-selling novel PERFUME was coveted by Hollywood for many years, and finally makes it to the screen in this production helmed by Tom Tykwer (RUN LOLA RUN). The film stays remarkably faithful to the author's vision, perfectly summoning up the brooding ominousness of small-town life in 18th-century France, and getting the casting of its central character, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw), exactly right. Grenouille is an orphan whose sense of smell is extraordinarily acute. He impresses master perfumer Baldini (Dustin Hoffman) enough to work for him, and this sets Grenouille off on an epic quest to find the perfect scent. When he discovers that killing young women and bottling their essence is the only way he can achieve his dream, Grenouille is soon a wanted man with multiple murders to his name. However, when it comes to making one last kill--namely the attractive redhead Laura (Rachel Hurd-Wood)--the young perfumer may have met his match in her overprotective father, Richis (Alan Rickman).Tykwer's film is an impressive achievement, not least because the subject of scent and the cinematic medium were always going to make uneasy bedfellows. Couple that with the weight of expectation caused by the millions of readers who have delighted in Suskind's words, and it needed a brave director to take on such a project. Whishaw is a revelation in his first major screen appearance, and Tykwer made a wise choice in bringing in some older heads (Rickman, Hoffman) to support the younger actor. Visually, the film is stunning, and cinematographer Frank Griebe clearly worked hard to bring Suskind and Tykwer's visions to life. But ultimately this is an ensemble piece, with cast and crew all pulling together to create a film that simmers with a hushed menace throughout.

    OMG

This movie will certainly make you think. Hannibal Lector type main character- only this one is not locked up. He is on the loose in France. Many murdered young women. I'm not into horror so I'm not a good judge of the film. The storyline overwhelmed my opinion of the film. I probably won't hang the CD up to reflect sunlight and keep the birds off of the back porch. It needs to go in the trash. Creepy

  • Repulsive and hypnotic at the same time

I love Twyker's work and the talent in this film (Dustin Hoffman, Alan Rickman) was a definite draw for me. But it's Ben Whishaw, a youthful unknown playing the lead character, who really stands out. He's utterly repellant and mesmerizing at the same time. This is not an easy film to like- how can you sympathize with a serial killer? But the film is so artistically done that one can almost excuse the cold-blooded nature of his crimes. Props to Tom Twyker for skillfully translating *the sense of smell* to a film and the sets & costumes are amazing. The ending will leave you speechless.. especially the scene that must have set a new world's record for the largest gathering of naked people ever filmed.

  • perfume

I first read the book by Patrick Suskind back in college and I must say that this must be the most unique story that I have ever read. The movie itself is good and the lead actor Ben Whishaw as Jean Baptiste Grenouille played the character very well about an obsessed man who wants to capture the scent of virgins to create the best perfume in the world so that he be will loved and admired by everyone because he himself has no scent of his own. Dustin Hoffman does a very good job of playing the master perfumer to teach Grenouille how to create the best perfumes in Paris. Excellent casts as well and the location is amazing. Tom Tykwer did a great job in directing this movie since Run Lola Run.

  • Sinfully Creepy Flix

I bought this movie based on the reviews. This is a story about a man who was born weird from the start. From birth, he has the gift of smell which creeps most people out even when he is a baby born under the counter in an open air outside market. It is eerie, seductive, beautiful & weird throughout the entire movie. This is a different type of murderer in that whom, why & what for he hunts his victims & kills them for their essence to make the perfect perfume. Not recommended for children ever. You will either love it or hate it. For adults only! Depending on one's tastes & preferences, I would rate it a C+. It would all be based on what you like or dislike in a movie.

  • It's fits

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer with poor commutations skills. Outside of that, it was beautiful film, every scene well done; the acting wasn't bad and minor plot holes. It does keep you guessing who will be killed next. Outside of the fact the main charter is very odd and seems to have bad luck follow him around, or at least anyone who has owned him. I must admit the movie kept a good pace so I wasn’t so bored. But this is pace is a summer walk, not running head long in action bear you mind. Over all I would said if you can watch it, if you like period films or hard to follow killing. If not try something else.
