Developed by SSI, Allied General is a turn-based strategy game originally released for the PC. Your objective is to take control of either the Allied or Axis powers and engage in strategic warfare across the varying terrain of the European countryside.<br><br>There are over 35 different scenarios based on actual events that took place during World War II, each an attempt to stop Germany from world domination. You play as an American, British or Soviet general who must lead your troops to victory. As you progress through the campaigns, your individual units become more powerful and experienced.<br><br>It is up to you to carry out the battles, but be warned, success only comes to those who carefully plan ahead. Players interested in history may use actual strategies documented for the war, while others may want to experiment with their methods to victory. The choice is entirely up to you -- but succeed by any means necessary. For variety, a few alternate history campaigns have also been included; simply missions that attempt to document what would have happened if so-and-so had done this, or if a certain campaign had never taken place.

Excellent WWII Strategy Game!
Allied General is a WWII strategy based game for the Playstation 1, and now PS2, gaming console. It is a turn based game where you command either the American, English, or Russian forces fighting against mainly the German, and occasionally, the Italian military. The gameplay is quite specific and extensive. Anytime a game comes with over a forty page instruction manual you know you've got a tough one on your hands. As the allied general you must choose landing points, areas of advance, key areas to secure, what troops to land, where to attack, etc. If you choose well the enemy will be defeated and you can move on to the next battle. If not, your troops will be annihilated or will retreat. Allied General is the second in SSI's 5-Star Series Games; the first was Panzer ... SSI, probably one of the best known strategy gaming companies, also released the popular strategy based Warhammer Series games which included Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen. They stay true to their roots as the detail in this game is staggering. Each unit you command is painstakingly researched down to the smallest detail. The variety of units available to command is quite surprising considering the PS1's limitations. You will be commanding everything from Infantry Units, to tanks, to fighters, to warships, and even beachhead defensive cannons. This is not a real time based game but is a slower turn based game and each battle can therefore last hours. The Advanced AI is pretty good and will react to your movements and unit positions. Adding to this are the detailed statistics which allow you to see how each unit is faring. Another nice touch to the game allows your units with combat experience to increase their rating and become better fighters as the game progresses. The battle clips are decent and some of the audio and video clips are quite good. Make no mistake with Allied General - this is an old school style strategy game where strategy, and not the game play, is most important. This is not a shooter game like the Medal of Honor Series, which is excellent in a different way, but a slow paced strategy game. However, for fans of WWII games who love statistics and realistic strategy based gameplay, Allied General is a must.

Allied General depicts real world examples of World War II battles and allows the player to be the decision maker during the sequence of battle. In the campaign mode of play you get to keep the units that survived that battle and they gain battle experience. During scenario play all units are chosen for you ahead of time, but you can add to these units up to a point and as they are being destroyed. I personally like the idea of planning an attack, defending a location and coordinating my battle units. If you enjoy a more hands-on approach where you are operating the equipment i.e.: aircraft, tank, gun, etc. this is not the game for you. Don't waste your money. This game is more similar to a board game like "Risk". I wish the game had a zoom function. You are only allowed to choose a ... Allied General for Playstation is the nearest match of the old style wargames. Like Avalon Hill, Spi board games, you get a hex based map, and then place your units. You can adjust the difficuly too. Once you get the feel of the rules, controls, turn off the animations, they are a waste of time. Optional weather and supply rules. All in all, a bargain, if you can find it, buy it. A sister game, PANZER GENERAL 1, came out first, just as much fun. These games were a real hit back in 1996. After a long time, the strategy can be predicted, to a degree, BUT...the randomness of the combat results, can vary.Allied General for Playstation is the nearest match of the old style wargames. I liked the fact that I can buy games that my older children played and liked but for some reason or another don't have that game any more. They like to play them again after many years, I guess the feeling is nostalgic or they bring back good memories or feelings of when they were small. I know I enjoy playing games like Defender and Galaga just because I can play them over and over without pumping out my allowance like I did when I was a kid. Having them available now for Playstation or Xbox brings back great memories and makes me feel like I can actually beat my kids at some games that they're not familiar with.Ha!
