If you enjoy the Hornblower series, and particularly if you are currently reading the series, you will really enjoy this simple companion. It contains maps and personal notes by the author CS Forester that are quite rewarding.

Book: The Hornblower Companion by C.S. Forester Review by Daniel Hedges This is a fabulous book ! Anyone who is a Horatio Hornblower fan would be crazy not to have this book. I cannot overstate how much fun it is to reference this book while reading the Hornblower series. Even if you have already read the series, this book will be like having a scrap book of your memories. Forester wrote this book with chapters referencing each one of his Hornblower novels. The chapters show the geography and battle plans of the area and action described in the books. While Hornblower was a fictitious character, the areas and the basic events reference real historical events. The book has many sketches of various ships and the drawings are beautifuly created. As you read your next Hornblower book, you will find yourself keeping a copy of the “Hornblower Companion” right next to you. There is nothing like maps and drawings to help you visualize what is taking place in the novels. This book by Forester is one of the best planned and laid-out books I’ve ever seen! It was created by a true master of his craft. No Hornblower fan can exist without this book!!! Go buy one on eBay!!! Daniel Hedges “Hedges Collectibles” on eBayRead full review
I'm a 65-year-old man who has been reading Hornblower since I was 14. My wife's wedding present to me was ALL the Hornblower books. I even have C Northcote Parkinson's book on Horatio Hornblower as if he really lived. But this book has all the maps that let me see where the intrepid Captain was and what he did. I've read some of Forster's ideas on how to write so these in this book ara an added bonus. Like Hemingway, I recommend Forster to every literate person I know.
I wish I had checked this out of the library and scanned the 30 maps. They're good to reference and probably should have been included in each book. This book is not informative like the two Master and Commander series companion books. Those show the different ships, uniforms, weapons, real vs. fiction, political background, etc. This is really a minimal effort
This is an invaluable aide to any fan of the Hornblower series. It provides maps to help keep track of the action in all major episodes -- so important to keep up with wind direction to understand the ship handling described. The personal notes are a little tedious, but occasionally interesting. I'd prefer more detailed sketches of the ships involved and a glossary of nautical terms to keep me out of the dictionary.
Nice book to gert morer infprmation about the places where the story is acting.
