I bought the 6 1/2". This is a nice set of Wood salt and pepper grinders. The knob on top and the shaft are both metal however the grinding mechanism is made of plastic ( I do recommend these, Just pointing that out). The coarseness is changed by adjusting the tension of the metal knob on top. I had been using the disposable grocery store salt and pepper grinders. Now I feel fancy. This is a good purchase.
