While designed to maintain the winning mix of playability and accuracy for which the series is known, NHL 2005 also adds a few notable features. Gamers who master the new "Open Ice Control" system will be able to switch quickly from player to player -- even those not currently in control of the puck -- allowing their squad to set up passes and one-timers, rush the net for rebounds, or double-team a threatening forward. Along with the game's "Total Player Awareness" features, which are designed to allow timing-based passes and aimed shots, skilled gamers can learn to use all six men on the ice like a single, dominating, well-oiled machine.<br><br>Individual player personalities are more prominent in this year's game, as specific AI and animations have been added to reflect the real-life athletes' tendencies, toward agility versus power, for example, or offensive versus defensive play. The game's skating engine has been revamped as well, designed to offer more direct control without sacrificing the feeling of realistic momentum. Other favorite features and options return from previous years, including a refined dynasty mode that features quick and accessible informational updates, and a greater focus on the meat-and-potatoes management challenges a real GM faces in running a successful franchise. In addition to skating as any of the 30 NHL teams in standard modes, gamers can also compete for the World Cup of Hockey, as one of the top eight national teams, and play in re-creations of the actual international arenas that host the tournament.

a good game
The playing: NHL 2005 is another hockey game made by EA. I have played a lot of hockey games in the past like all the previous NHL games that were made by EA. NHL 2004 was a great game and I enjoyed it. Some may say that it is even better than NHL 2005 but to me that isn't the case. They are both great games. NHL 2004 had great skating and good animations a really great hockey game. Presentation: This is definitely the high point of this game. The graphics in this game are amazing much better than any other previous hockey game or ESPN 2k5. All of the players faces are so realistic I don't need to look at their jersey numbers or the names on their jersey's to know who they are I can tell. The same goes for the coaches. The open ice controls I never really used much. But the open ice support can be helpful at times. Now the defense in this game are great. You can't just waltz in and shoot, these guys are tough. They don't feel like poke checking, they would like nothing better than laying you flat on your back. This adds a whole new level of realism to the game which I love. The new strategies that you can change before the face offs and just all the different strategies in general is a very nice feature. However this game is missing a few features from last year such as the CAP(create-a-player), league leaders, and the EA sports bio. They did have a CAP but there were to many bugs so they decided to pull it. There are a lot of things in the menu's the elite leagues can be fun because of the different rules they have like in the SM-liiga the top scorer on each team wears no helmet, and in DEL no game can end in a tie. The free 4 all can be fun to play with your friends and get very competitive. Game play: The game play in this game is great the menu's are easy to navigate and have a lot of different options to choose from. The hitting is great and not all that difficult to do, and the bruise control gives you all the power. Of course in this game there are sliders to make the game easier or harder for you. The player specific dekes are great you can deke around the defense so good they wont even know where you are until you score. The shots aren't bad most of the goals can be really realistic all though some of the deflections and one timer set ups can be unfair. That why you hit them hard and fast so they don't get a chance.The overall game play in this game is great hard hitting, with a quick pace, and just all around really fun. Final thoughts: NHL 2005 is a great all around game with amazing graphics, hard hits, and a very realistic hockey game. Definitely my favorite hockey game right now and for this year. This game is really amazing but I'm only giving it a 9 out of 10 because it was missing a few features like League leaders, Create a player, and the Sports Bio. Really a great game I suggest you buy it. overall rating - 4/5

With the NHL player lockout having now moved beyond the realm of mere probability into cold, hard fact, hockey fans are likely to be on the hunt for any kind of hockey they can find between now and next year. On the video game front, both Visual Concepts and EA are once again adding new installments to their yearly NHL franchises. ESPN NHL 2K5, Visual Concepts' title, came out on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox earlier this month and proved to be a phenomenal game of hockey. NHL 2005, EA's newest hockey title, looks fantastic, but it doesn't quite compare in terms of its actual hockey gameplay. Sure, the game definitely improves upon certain aspects of last year's NHL 2004, but in other key areas, the game suffers from some occasionally overambitious artificial intelligence and restrictive game ... With the NHL player lockout having now moved beyond the realm of mere probability into cold, hard fact, hockey fans are likely to be on the hunt for any kind of hockey they can find between now and next year. Make no mistake. This is still a solid game of hockey, but it isn't the most realistic or best-playing NHL title out there, and as such, it shouldn't be your first choice for one. If you played NHL 2004, you'll notice a few subtle but useful control tweaks in this year's game. The first and perhaps most important one is the separation of slap shots and wrist shots into two separate buttons. Other games have given you ways to control exactly what kinds of shot you wanted to send toward the net, but this method is by far the easiest. Now, if you want to send a blistering slap shot from the point on command, you can. And if you want to get in close to the net to send a wrister up top-shelf, you can do that too. NHL 2005 also features a brand-new wraparound shot that is far more like the type of quick wraparounds you would see in a real NHL game. Just press one of the shot buttons while behind the net, and your player will try to push the puck into the corner of the net. If you played the last Midway-produced NHL title, NHL Hitz Pro, you may recognize this exact same shot from that game. However, just because EA didn't invent it doesn't make it a bad idea. So, in fact, it's an immensely useful addition. Another useful control change is the ability to shift control to a player that isn't in possession of the puck when on offense. By pressing a button, you'll then be in control of another forward while the player in control of the puck moves up-ice. Position yourself correctly and you'll be in line for a quick one-timer. The one downside to this mechanic is that the camera always stays trained on the player who's controlling the puck, so it can sometimes be hard to get a bearing on the controlled player's position. However, once you get the hang of it, this mechanic becomes pretty indispensable. One big gameplay fix from last year's game is the whole passing system. NHL 2005 still has the same basic two-button passing system from last year, but it's been polished up to fix some of the problems people had with passes just missing to the left or right. The puck still doesn't just automatically go to the closest player's stick, but passing is generally a lot more accurate and easier to manage, so you're far less likely to whiff on what should be an easy and clear pass. EA Chicago has also gone to great lengths to fix some of the offensive bunching issues found in last year's game. Forwards and defensemen on the offensive side of the puck are much better about spreading out in the offensive zone, giving you better chances to set up real plays......

NHL 2005 This game really built on the Dynasty mode introduced in NHL 2004. NHL 2005 had insane replay value due to the dynasty mode, and the gameplay was incredibly fun as well. The only problem I had with this game was the fact that MArkus Naslund was on the Cover. Oh well... at least it wasn't the convict Todd Bertuzzi. Final Verdict: 3/5 Rent or Buy?: If you're looking for a good hockey game from this era of EA Sports video games, pick up NHL 06 or even NHL 07. This game was good, but doesn't compare to those two.
