I have a shop in my basement and it's' lights are part of the whole lighting.from one main basement light switch. I added the switch in series so that the shoo lights could be off when not in use. I rarely use the count down timer but I do use the digital on off setting. if the lights are on when you switch off the main switch the digital switch goes off and stays off until you turn it on again. this prevents leaving the shop lights on for hours or even days when I'm not in the shop and the rest of the basement can still be used. In other words I use the main switch as a master switch and the digital switches as zone Occupancy switches.
