Garmin i3, What a Sweet Little Gadget.
I had been scrolling page after page of E-Bay adds looking for a GPS. I researched all models and brands via the Internet and settled on the Garmin StreetPilot® i3 Car GPS Receiver. It seemed to fulfil my basic needs. (To my surprise this thing is loaded.) It was in my price range and all the extra gadgets didnt really interest me. I have a wireless headset for my phone, so why pay extra for one in the GPS. I have a stereo that plays music, so why do I need one built into my GPS. I had only two reservations about this model. The first is that it has a small screen (2.7" as opposed to a 3.5" screen). Well good news, it actually is easy to read and as far as I am concerned, it is the perfect size. The second reservation I had was the amount of memory for turn by turn navigation. The ... I had been scrolling page after page of E-Bay adds looking for a GPS. The 128mb card included worried me. I was able to load approximately 8 states on it but that just will not do for me. I was able to purchase a 1gb card for under $20 and bam, all maps loaded with room to spare. I can drive anywhere in the USA and Canada with turn by turn voice instructions. I could even drive to Hawaii, but I would probably get the unit wet and its not water proof. I can honestly say that I was as Happy as Dog in a Fire Hydrant Factory. For all non southern people, it met or exceeded all of my expectations. I recommend it highly unless you are one of those people who have the primo model. If that is the case, you probably won't be reading this review anyway, you will just be looking for the most expensive model out there. Have you ever gotten lost? Tired of having your wife or husband constantly mock the fact that you are “lost again”? I have the unfortunate curse of being absolutely directionless, if I make a wrong turn into an airport, it takes me ½ hour to figure the way out. If you have the same problem, this handy little device was a Godsend for me and could possibly be for you as well. My first question was the following: Is there a subscription services necessary for this device? The answer is NO, just plug it in, let it acquire satellite signals and you are off (that is after you load the desired map data from a PC which only takes a few minutes). Pros: The device works using either a lighter adapter plug or it can work only on several AA batteries. It can show turn by turn directions or a map ... Have you ever gotten lost? Mine came with a suction cup mount for the window as well as a dashboard mount for those of you in states that don’t allow anything being attached to the glass. The color screen is easy to read and the programming of addresses is rather easy considering that there are only 2 buttons, one which is used to go back and change screens and the other, a wheel similar to a mouse wheel which is used to scroll to a specific address and pressing it chooses the highlighted address. An easy to use device which will certainly be welcomed by people that aren’t all that technical. Cons: Due to the fact that this is not a military grade device, the turns and/or streets can be off a bit (seems to be up to 45’ off at the maximum) if you are in an area with many close streets it could cause a problems, but chances are that you will be using it to find an address and not launch a Cruise Missile, so slightly off is certainly manageable. Although the screen is readable, it would certainly be better if the 1.3” viewable area was larger. I have recently noticed a slight glare or reflection during times of bright sunlight where the screen can be difficult to read due to the reflective quality of the device. The memory is limited so that you can load only several states worth of maps, so if you plan on a very long trip over more than 4 or so connected states, this unit is not for you. Overall: I would recommend this device; it has worked very well for me, I am able to read the device and program it quite easily. It is certainly accurate enough to serve my purposes and get me to where I’m going. It is inexpensive compared to other devices out on the market and there is no maintenance required. Experience with GARMIN StreetPilot i3 GPS
Good results so far with the GARMIN i3 Pilot, on local trips. I've used it on several short trips in the Upstate NY area, maps are fairly complete, and voice command instructions are excellent. It's simple to use, once you get past the initial learning curve. The GARMIN instruction sheet that comes with the i3 is relatively poor...it leaves allot for different interpretations, missing information, etc. I had to go to the GARMIN web site to get FAQ-questions answered and for updated software(so count that as a negative strike against GARMIN). Once I got used to the thing, by taking local trips(knowing route and times), then I became more comfortable depending on it (this is my first GPS system...so I'm a newbie to this GPS stuff). I like the fact that if you make a wrong turn, "satellite babe" doesn't get upset...no big deal! Satellite babe" responds with say "Recalculating" and she gets you back on course to your destination, no muss, no fuss. Much more forgiving than with "wife unit." With shipping...all up, all in, from eBay, I paid about $150, which is very nice for such a sophisticated, small(baseball sized) GPS-device...I now have a new, fond, appreciation for all those GPS satellites floating out there in space. Another nice feature is that it is "small" we plan to take it on a trip to Florida, using a rental car. The unit is small, so it doesn't hog up much luggage space in airline travel. The unit came with a nice carrying bag, which holds the GPS device and its 12volt-car charger. Overall, it's a good bargain...once I got past the poor GARMIN instruction sheet...I rate this as a "good to excellent" eBay purchase. Plus I like the GARMIN brand name(not withstanding the poor instruction sheet).

Entry level garmin with all the info.
This is a n excellent entry level gps. It has all the features you should need to get from point a to point b with little trouble. Using the three button input can get some getting use to but I must say it does not hold you back. Finding places in the search can take a little time but the info and turn by turn is always accurate. I really like this nav. unite and am actually learning many shortcuts that I have overlooked for years. Bottom line, If you rely on map books for you job to get around like I use to, save yourself the space and time by getting one. At these prices there is no excuse or reason to even contemplate the purchase.This is a n excellent entry level gps. Garmin Gets You There
I decided to buy this Garmin StreetPilot i3 GPS Receiver because I had enough money in PayPal to pay for it, and because I have had more than my share of problems trying to find certain places without gettng lost; never mind all those claims that guys don't need assistance getting somewhere. I do like that this lower-end model does what it claims as long as the destination is in its database. It did get me to two or three business places I might have not found so easily without it. On the minus side, it doesn't always recognize places I have tried to enter into it--not even my own home address. This may be corrected with a map update which, hopefully, the Garmin people will take into account as per the online form I sent them. It also EATS Alkaline batteries so it's best to use the ... It also EATS Alkaline batteries so it's best to use the included cigarette lighter adapter, and then only when you are absolutely unfamiliar with an area to which you are headed. I learned almost immediately that when you download state info into it at home, its best to avoid all but those states you drive to and within on a regular basis. I spend most of my time on the road in west Iowa or going into east Nebraska, and have family in the Kansas City area (where Garmin is located), so usually I only need to have it give me info for a four-state area. If your travels take you to a rarely or never-before visited state, you may wish to reload the Garmin first with info for all states on your way and temporarily delete those usually-travelled states you know you'll avoid during the trip. Another minor problem is that the suction cup may occasionally loosen and fall off the windshield with the device attached, so be sure it's on securely, and don't leave it on the cup knob when it's not being used. You wouldn't want a pricey item like this to repeatedly fall and maybe get damaged. Still, this is a nifty little gadget for when you absolutely need to get someplace but aren't sure how to get there. For an entry-level model without the extras I don't currently need, the $200 price is reasonable.
