This is an excellent reel! I have already Caught Two Swordfish with it! Yes! they can handle SWORDFISH! Ours was a 144# & 227# Fish but i think it would do fine up to maybe 350-400# fish. Just dont use the motor the ENTIRE time. The motor is mostly for bringing baits up & maybe setting the hook but fight the fish manually mostly...although we did use the motor a fair amount of the time. As we would tire we would use it for a few minutes at a time then go back to manual fighting
