I DIDN'T KNOW ARTIC MONKEYS COULD PLAY INSTRUMENTS THIS WELL.
I FIRST HEARD THE ARCTIC MONKEYS WHILE WATCHING JEOPARDY: I have heard of the Arctic Monkeys for a few years now and like judging a book by its cover, I judged this band by their name --- I automatically assumed these guys were a joke --- kind of like The Bloodhound Gang ya'know? Well, one day while watching Jeopardy (I know right?), it was college Jeopardy week or something and in one of the categories re: music, Alex Trebek (host) played a sample of "Do I Wanna Know" and the contestant answered correctly, "who are the Arctic Monkeys?"... and it happened right then and there, I was bitten by these primates. "Do I wanna Know" came across the TV screen so smooth and sexy, I thought where have I been? I like smooth and sexy. It was one part Daft Punk, another part Queens of the Stone Age, ... I FIRST HEARD THE ARCTIC MONKEYS WHILE WATCHING JEOPARDY: I have heard of the Arctic Monkeys for a few years now and like judging a book by its cover, I judged this band by their name --- I automatically assumed these guys were a joke --- kind of like The Bloodhound Gang ya'know? I immediately took to the internet, sampling the album and jamming the whole album through. I YouTubed the music videos for the album's singles, "R U Mine?" and "Do I Wanna Know", both funky and original, while it was the music video for "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" that truly sealed the deal. I ordered the CD that same day, at that point I had heard AND seen enough... I was sold. Other official singles include, "One for the Road" (this is great ear-candy, it tends to linger around in my brain moreso than the others for some catchy reason) and the ever so hip-hop-rocking, "Arabella" (the fifth and current single. I also hear that there is a sleazy video out for this song. Note to self: YouTube, "Arabella" after publishing this review). And, speaking of hip-hop and rock, this fusion is the backbone of, "AM", they join forces so effortlessly. Great examples of this fusion can be heard on, "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" and "Arabella". The drumming on these singles are made of the stuff that 90's hip-hop thrived off of, see: The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, and De La Soul. The non-singles are just as deserving, "Fireside and "Snap Out of It" have that great all-around catchy arena rock feel to them, while the closing album slow-jam, "I Wanna Be Yours" has karaoke jam of the year written all over it. I know, yes, I am late to the party (I don't profess to be that much of a hipster) but I think I entered in on the soiree just at the right time. And, if you are like me, judging a band by its name, then take it from me, the Arctic Monkeys are not a joke! I repeat, the Arctic Monkeys are not a joke!!!
