About this product

Product Information

Of all the film versions of the famed 1881 gunfight, this one, starring Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday, probably has the highest testosterone quotient. Focusing on the friendship between the forthright, responsible sheriff and the risk-taking, consumptive gambler, it suggests that their relationship is based on this opposition of qualities. Wyatt's stormy romance with gambler Laura Benbow (Rhonda Fleming) and Doc's rivalry with Johnny Ringo (John Ireland) over the affections of local madam Kate Fisher (Jo Van Fleet) add to the tension preceding the final showdown. When Wyatt's brothers, Tombstone lawmen, ask for his help in evening the odds against Ike Clanton (Lyle Bettger), his brothers, the McLowerys, and Johnny Ringo, Doc decides to join his friend. After Wyatt gets to town, he quickly puts a crimp in Ike's cattle-rustling activities, which leads the outlaw to set him up for assassination. A mix-up leads to Wyatt's youngest brother, Jimmy (Martin Milner), getting killed in Wyatt's place. Doc tries to talk him out of revenge, but the enraged lawman will have none of it, and the scene is set for the historic final gun battle. This solid, well-made Western is hoisted by the fine screenplay by novelist Leon Uris and the charisma of the two stars, as well as an outstanding suporting cast, including Dennis Hopper, Jack Elam, Lee Van Cleef, Earl Holliman, and Kenneth Tobey.

Excellent movie and a true story of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday.

This is a wonderful and engaging movie, and it's a true story about Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. The two main characters are excellent in their roles (as in all their movies). One thing I like is they are both always dressed so neat and clean, with ties.

  • Gunfight at the OK Corral

This movie is a great example of a 1950s "A" Hollywood western. Starring Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp, Kirk Douglas as Doc Holiday and a young Dennis Hopper as one of the cowboys. With a screen play by Leon Uris and musical score by Dimitri Tiomkin and theme song sung by Frankie Lane there are no dull moments in this movie. It is just what it was made to be, a great entertaining escapist movie. Made in the day when Kirk Douglas' Holiday was about as damaged as a "hero" was allowed to be portrayed. On the other hand if you are looking for historical accuracy, this is Hollywood, not history. This Hollywood version of the gunfight takes nearly 20 minutes and several city blocks to cover what happened in less than a minute in a vacant lot. If you want 2 hours of exciting story, this is a ...

  • Highly entertaining movie.

This movie is based on the actual gunfight that took place at Tombstone's OK Corral. Most of what you see in the movie did not happen in reality. Yet, the story, dialogue, music, the set, etc are highly entertaining. Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster make a great combo. I have watched this movie many times, but never got bored. The main characters were the infamous Doc Holiday and notorious Wayat Earp.

  • Great movie!

I have loved this movie since it first came out in about 1956. Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and Rhonda Fleming are wonderful in it.

  • Well paced if fanciful version of the famous gunfight .

Solid acting and directing including a glimpse of a young DeForest Kelly.
