Amusing british comedy
A light and amusing British comedy. Some of the British humor is lost on an American audience because we do not recognize all of their locals customs and personalities. Most story lines are very predictable. Lead actor & actress are quite good in their roles. Most supporting people are very believable as well. Quite entertaining overall but not as good as "As Time Goes By" or "Waiting For God". Still IMHO better than "Father Ted" and "Vicar of Dibley".A light and amusing British comedy. British Odd-Couple Fun!
I bought this dvd a few years ago, not knowing anything about it and hoping it was funny. Yes....it is very funny! You have Elaine Stritch playing an outspoken American author, living in England, who is use to having things done her way and Donald Sinden as a very proper butler who is also use to doing things the "proper English" way. These two butt heads from the start but you get the sense that Elaine is having a whole lot of fun with this proper butler who is trying to put a little decorum into her life....by British standards. She's a hard drinking party gal who's been around and knows everyone there is to know of importance. This is the British version of the odd-couple, no doubt! I love the way the American and British humor play off of one another. Each gives in a little, but ... I bought this dvd a few years ago, not knowing anything about it and hoping it was funny. This program was originaly aired on the BBC about 1976. Hoever, it is not dated in the slightest because most of the humor revolves around the two main characters, Dorothy McNab(American) and Robert(British), played by Elaine Stritch and Donald Sinden respectively. Dorothy is a succesful writer of mystery novels and Robert is her live in butler. Most of the humor revolves around the differences between British and American people, between the correct and incorrect way to do things and so on. Each episode has a plot as a framework for what is going on. But, really what I enjoy most is the verbal reparte' between Dorothy and Robert. It is unusual to have a show which only has two main characters. However, these too are more than up to the task. And they did it for four seasons. One ... They are exaggerated, ofcourse, but still very believable Americans and not just the usual BUSINESS MAN or TEXAN. All in all, I really enjoy this show and was glad I could finally find it.
