Mexico's openly gay filmmaker Jaime Humberto Hermosillo often explores issues related to sexuality in his films. In the crime drama EL MISTERIO DE LOS ALMENDROS, two private detectives are hired to investigate the strange and perverse goings-on in the home of Dona Josefina, a wealthy and decadent widow. In order to infiltrate her inner circle, the two womanizers are forced to pose as a pair of gay lovers, a proposition made difficult by their overcompensating machismo. Yet they must maintain the charade in order to get a closer look at Dona Josefina as the scandals in her home continue to proliferate. EL MISTERIO DE LOS ALMENDROS combines mystery, black comedy, and drama in an exploration of sexuality and morality.
