Very fun & challenging game for the sega system. This game is similar to the SNES version but still feels like a different game. This game is a hidden gem for this system and my personal favorite. I strongly recommend anyone who owns a sega to play this. I regulary play this (in 2019) with my brother & nephew a couple times a week - its a fun multi-player game. If given the option, buy the SNES version (buy both really). I find the graphics better and the gameplay to be better on SNES but the sega version is still a top game. How has this game not been remastered?

The SEGA Genesis version of Sunset Riders is more of a custom made version rather than an arcade conversion or approximation. This is the exact same scenario as with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Vs Teenage Mutant Nijna Turtles: The HyperStone Heist. Some of the cons: Two of the playable characters are missing, no cinematic intro, graphics' colours are somewhat dark and thus make enemy fire hard to see in some stages, many cinematic intermissions are missing, many stages are completely changed and don't resemble the arcade version at all, voice overs are the usual raspy Genesis fare. Some of the pluses: No slowdown, you can continue where you are defeated instead of repeating the stage, there are fewer bosses to compensate for larger levels, the horseback riding mini game is here, more challenging, no censorship of characters or enemy types, better usage of drums and melody in music, can fix your character in a static position to fire in all 8 directions with one of the buttons for crowd control or precise aiming. Gameplay is recommended with the normal 3 button controller unless you have a very trained 6 button one. The game is hard... Not Contra: HardCorps' levels of hard but difficult. Long stages mean you have to plan ahead and memorize patterns, specially in the train stage. Go in there just shooting and you will hit the game over screen fast. This game is a good value if what you seek is to add of complete your collection. If you are seeking it as a substitute for the arcade or Super Nintendo version for price concerns you will be disappointed as this is not those games. It merely shares the characters and name. Sunset Riders is a surprisingly fun game that used to be popular in arcades in the early 1990s. It plays similar to other games made by Konami, such as Contra, but is encompassed by a Western-theme of "Be the hero, save the girl, stop the bad guy" all with guns. This is not a particularly violent game (no blood) and is great for 1 or 2 player co-op. You have a choice between two characters who use different weaponry (pistols & shotguns) and you have a total of 4 bosses, 8 stages (with bonus stages). This was one of my favorite games when I was a kid, and its not surprising that its as hard to come by as it is. Pick this one up if you never had a chance to play it.
i love any old school arcade game that i used to play when i was a little kid, and Sunset Riders has no exception. it's just an overall great game, it takes you back when you would have fun trying to beat the same levels and not get tired of it. the humor in it is great as well. and well i personally believe that there's nothing like the original video games you used to play as a kid
Hello this is my review for the sega genesis game, sunset riders. This game is your basic run and gun side scroller, with one ecception. It is a original western 2 player co-op which is rare in this modern age of video games. However the sega genesis version is average at best.In the arcade the bosses use to talk with catchy one liners, and had a bunch of stages. All of that is left out in the sega genesis version.I can't remember the super nintendo version but I Read on gamefaqs.com It is better then this version. The game is way to short with almost no replay value unless your playing with a friend. If you are looking for something original, and like western shooting games then play the super nintendo version.Don't get me wrong though the sega genesis version can be o.k. if your are playing with another person.Read full review
