  • FOUR STARS!

I bought this cd to replace the record album I'd purchased years ago. The orchestrations are lush, and he sings the standards beautifully. If you are a Nilsson fan I recommend that you rent the DVD "Who is Harry Nilsson, and Why is Everybody Talkin' About Him?" In it, they 'talk' about how he had wanted to do this album for a long time, but the people in his circle of music associates warned him against doing it, as it wasn't in line with his 'brand'. Thank goodness he didn't listen to them. While I love his unique style when he sings his own compositions, this is a great addition to a Nilsson collection.

  • Listen to an Old Friend

In 1972, the singer of Lime and the Coconut fame put together a cd of classic crooner medleys couched in luxurious string arrangements. I had discovered this gem in a $0.99 bin at Woolworths in the early '80s and lost the rerecorded cd somewhere in a move. The other day the new cd arrived and I listened , expecting to be reminded of another time and to like most of it. But it was wrong. I was stunned at the beauty of the arrangements and listened to it 3x in a row.

  • Cool Schmool

Harry Nilsson's recording of standards was considered career suicide at the time; old songs weren't "cool." He knew better. He recognized a good song and his interpretations are contagiously joyous and timeless. His choir boy voice is in good form, phrasing is flawless, and arrangements are top notch. "Lullaby in Ragtime" (Sylvia Fine) from the 1957 film, "The Five Pennies" is a particularly fine gem. His gentle version is indeed a charming lullaby for any lucky baby who gets to hear it.

  • A Little Touch of Schmilsson In The Night (Expanded Edition)

I've owed this album since it came out in the early1970's. First as an LP (Still have it) and then as the 12 track CD. My aunt is 96 years old in a care facility and has dementia. I gave up the CD in a second because Harry's voice and music would give comfort at this time of her life. So I bought this replacement and now I have 16 tracks to enjoy in my life. I'm 72 now. The old show tunes will just mellow you out. When I was first married over 45 years ago, my wife and I would dance to the music after a week's work on a Saturday Morning in our jammies! What a romantic time it was for us.
