Synopsis
Six day bicycle racing was the biggest thing in the sporting world during the 1920s and early 1930s. This book tells the story of this sports discipline, tracing its roots back to the 1890s to its eventual decline at the beginning of the Second World War, and the more attempts to revitalise it., A photographic portrait of what was the most popular spectator sport in America during the period from 1900 to 1930: 6-day bicycle racing. It was a big-money sport, because bets were on. The sport was tough and the stakes were high, as the most prominent people in society flocked to Madison Square Garden to watch the races and place their bets. This compilation of historic photographs reproduced in fine duotone detail and accompanying text paints the complete picture of this fascinating but almost forgotten era in American sports., Six day bicycle racing was the biggest thing in the sporting world during the 1920s and early 1930s. Then, the race track was the centre of entertainment, and of course betting was what held it all together. In this book, Peter Nye, in collaboration with photographer Jeff Groman and documentary film producer Mark Tyson, tells the story of this unique sports discipline, tracing its roots back to the 1890s to its eventual decline at the beginning of the Second World War, and the more recent attempts to revitalise it.

- r***1 (179)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThe book was exactly as described and arrived quickly. The only problem is a recurring one with this seller and other similar sellers - the book is poorly packaged in a plastic envelope and gets heavily bumped in shipping. I would like to see the books wrapped before shipment, but I understand this can't be done for cost reason. Luckily it isn't an expensive book, and I will continue to purchase basic books from this seller. A+++++
- k***a (326)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchasePositive experience but could be better. Item description was accurate but, it was shipped in a simple bag with no carton or any protection. The bag was broken in places and the USPS bent the book like it was a newspaper and ruined what was an excellent looking book. That was clearly the USPS fault but a "Do Not Bend" or carton would help next time. Otherwise accurate description, value, condition and Fast shipping. I'm a returning customer and will keep buying from World of Books
