  • Buster Keaton TV Show

Buster had a very long career, starting out with his mom and dad (who appear in some of his films) and then appearing as Fatty Arbuckle's comedic accomplice (though without screen credit); then he broke through in his own silent shorts, proceeding to feature-length films (like Sherlock Jr and Steamboat Bill) which he directed and did all the amazing stunts for. Unfortunately, getting a financially sweet deal from MGM proved double-edged for Buster as he lost artistic control of the film process and got teamed with Jimmy Durante, which put a comedic jackhammer to Buster's own screen personality. In the mid to latter 30s Buster was able to 'rehab' to some extent from his MGM-Durante experience by making film shorts and it's fascinating to not only watch Buster but to listen to him: it's possible to gain a sense of how he would sound in his silent films and how nicely integral his own voice would be to his post-Arbuckle films. Buster then appeared in a few films in the 40s (post notably with Judy Garland). Then, after giving us a sense of what Keaton and Chaplain could be in Limelight, Buster set off to do his own TV show in the early 50s and it is fascinating to see how 'timeless' Buster's persona is from the Arbuckle films of 1918-19 right to the early 50s in an early TV format. The value of these TV pieces is quite simply that they feature and document a unique, inventive comic artiste.
