This is a fantastic product, it responds quickly to the remote and has many of the top audio and movie apps built into it. Its also VERY easy to set up and use and the remote will work with your Sony TV. The only downside I have found is it does not come with a wifi adaptor (and its not built in) so you have to use a cable direct to your router. I also found that I couldnt get the ipad or android remote function to work but I think this is because I have an at&t router.Quality of the picture and movie streaming is excellent though.
The tricky part of this unit is getting an internet connection. There is no built-in wi-fi, and the recommended usb wi-fi dongle has been discontinued. The price is existing dongles is way too high, 3 to 4 times what I paid for the player. Not being a network specialist, I researched it. Alternative dongles, if you can find them, are still pricey, and there's no guarantee they will work. It does have a port for an ethernet cable, and though my unit is not close enough to my internet router to connect it to the router, I have a wi-fi extender with an ethernet cable out that I plugged in nearby and connected my ethernet cable from the extender to the blu-ray unit. It plays SACD discs which is why I bought it, and the quality is good. The ebay entry indicated there was no remote, and it's impossible to use this unit without, so I ordered a new remote for less than $10. I consider the buy at my price to be a bargain.Read full review

This device is the BDP-BX38. It is sold primarily via membership only outlets. It is almost identical to the BDPS380. Both devices come with the same user manual which lists both devices on the cover. Via PDF's sent to me directly from Sony I learned the differences are as follows: The BDP-BX38 comes with an HDMI cable; BIVL: Live Streaming, Entertainment DB Browser (Gracenote etc.); Bit rate indicator for streaming; 3D: BD-ROM & 3D streaming from Camcorder. Neither one comes with built in WiFi but can have it via a SONY WiFi adapter added to either one of the USB ports. Both come with the exact same remote. Armed with this knowledge I read the reviews for both devices before deciding the BDP-BX38 was the one for me. I decided this based on the fact that though I do have a WiFi N network set up in my home the Wireless Router is parked on the same shelf and directly behind the Blu-Ray player so an Ethernet cable is an easy secure solution to that for me and I don't have to pay for a feature I would never use. I had a horrible Samsung Blu-Ray player that I tried to get to work for close to a year before taking a sledge hammer to the thing for some enjoyment prior to recycling the pieces at the e-waste collection center in my area. Setting up the Sony was far less of a headache than setting up the Samsung. The Sony updated itself in under 5 minutes compared to hours of being locked out of my Samsung. It played my collectors edition 3 disc Avatar Blu-Ray disc without a hiccup compared to an hour or so of will it or won't it games with the Samsung. I only wish I'd discovered this one sooner and or given up on the Samsung sooner! Oh and the Sony comes with a cool app for Android & Apple devices that replaces the remote control. For those that dislike the non flashy Sony menus and the clunky way of entering text I highly recommend the phone app if you have a phone that supports it.Read full review
A great inexpensive unit. The only downside which I was totally unaware of is that some "low end" blu ray players have no memory. You hit stop, step away for a bit and hit play and you`re right back to previews of coming attractions ect. I called sony and they said I can buy a usb device with at least 1 gb of memory and set it to sat-32[whatever that is] to solve the problem or upgrade to a bdp-580 which has memory. Wish I knew this before I made the purchase. If this is not an issue with you then a great way to get a good little blu ray player on a budget.
the sony blu-ray i got....manufacturer refurbished... has far exceeded my expectations in both quality...and ease of use...anyone can set it up in just a few minutes and the upconverting of standard dvd's is truely a wonder to behold..many friends have commented on how great and crystal clear regular dvd's look with this unit...sony sends out updates to programming and this blu-ray updates whenever it is needed...the internet apps are easy to access and have totally changed my viewing habits..i hve always used my hp laptop for entertainment but with the sony blu-ray i can turn my computer off and let the tv do it all...the price...$60.00 i paid has already paid for itself and i always recccomend ebay to friends if you want to get a great unit for a little money..get the sony bdp-bx38 blu-ray and change your viewing life...you wont be sorryRead full review
The difference between watching regular DVDs and Blu Ray is like the difference between VHS & DVDs. This player is very user friendly and easy to use. My only disappointment is that it is Wi Fi ready, & it does not have a built in Wi FI receiver. I did however hook it up to my router thru the Ethernet & now I can watch streaming video on through the Sony. I think Sony makes the best video products.
I have never owed a Blu-Ray player before this Sony BDP-BX38. I had a Sony Dvd recorder that had the 1080 upconversion. Just let me say that the real deal, the Sony Blu-Ray blew the 1080 upconversion away. It is great. I believe it has a beautiful picture, and I was an electronic tech for 9 years. Also it doesn't take any longer to load the disc than an other player. It also has some cool options on it if you can stream video. I don't have high speed internet where I live, but if I did, the player has 4 different places to receive movies and music. I have to admit it blew me away. Thanks. Hope this helps someone else looking for a very good product. Oh yea, I really don't have any dislikes about this player and I've sort of been watching all my DVD's over again just to see how good the picture quality is. It's like watching them for the first time.Read full review
Best blu ray player I have ever used. Has many many apps, love how I can use my android phone as a remote.I will only buy sony products when it comes to home entertainment. This blu ray player at this price range is unbeatable. It upconverts dvd to hd quality, love watching ordinary dvds on in HD. Only complaint is built in wifi would be very convenient but you cant have everything.
The Sony DVD player that I used to own had issues with the remote control not always working. This was a big reason why I purchased the Sony Blu Ray...Well, it had the same issues- one minute it would work, then the player would not sync with the remote. It was not an issue with batteries or line of sight to the player, etc. For some reason the Sony remotes seem to have issues communicating with their respective players. Very frustrating... Also, the BX38 that I received had issues with freezing up when pausing, and a resume function that was less than reliable. Otherwise, the color saturation and sound was excellent, I just wish I didn't want to smash the thing every other day or so...
I picked this player up at a steal price because it had a little bit of cosmetic damage and no remote control. This is a great player less a little dent in the lid. This player was a snap to setup, within minutes after receipt I was connected to my wireless network and streaming Netflix, HuluPlus, Amazon Video on Demand and much more from the internet without a hitch. I tossed in a blu ray movie and it performed flawlessly, the image quality was outstanding, using the HDMI 1080i hookup, I have a nice HDTV but this player did its part in delivering an above average playback. I paid more for shipping than I did this player and would have normally had to pay a nearer to a couple of hundred for this player. I almost feel guilty for getting such a great deal for myself and my family.
